NOTTINGHAM TOWN. NIGHT.
Thunder rumbles as Gisborne walks out of the main gate. It closes behind him. He walks to the Trip to Jerusalem Inn and sees Allan’s mark on the post. He enters.
TRIP TO JERUSALEM INN. INTERIOR. BACK ROOM.
Allan waits. Gisborne closes the door.
GISBORNE: What have you got for me?
ALLAN: Nothing. You killed Roger of Stoke.
GISBORNE: Allan, you knew I’d kill him. You just didn't want to admit it to yourself.
ALLAN: You’re low.
GISBORNE: Yeah. And you are here for more money, so what do you want to tell me?
ALLAN: You've got a messenger, Henry of Lewes, arriving tomorrow, right?
GISBORNE: How do you know that?
ALLAN: He’s coming to tell you where and when the King plans to land when he returns to England. There’s going to be an ambush tomorrow on the North Road. So, if you want Henry to make it to Nottingham, you’d better change his route.
Gisborne hands Allan a few coins.
Hey, hey, hey! What do you call this?
GISBORNE: Noon, tomorrow. Gold... Gisborne grabs Allan’s jacket. ... if Henry arrives.
SHERWOOD FOREST. THE GREAT NORTH ROAD.
A net is suspended horizontally over the road. Robin walks down the middle of the road with his bow at his side. Allan sits up from his hiding spot amongst the leaves.
Robin stops.
ROBIN: He’s not coming.
Little John looks over.
He’s been tipped off.
ALLAN: By who?
Robin starts walking down the road again.
Don’t worry. He’s probably just late.
Robin stops and Allan walks towards him.
Horse needs shoeing or he stopped for a kip or something.
MUCH: Stepping out from behind a tree near Robin. He’s here to betray the King! He’s hardly going to stop for a nap.
WILL: Steps out. Could Marian have got the time wrong?
Djaq rolls out from under a blanket of leaves.
ALLAN: That’s a good point, actually. No, ’cause Marian’s trying to listen at keyholes ’n’ stuff, right?
Little John comes down the hill.
Could be making all kinds of mistakes.
Robin turns around, thinking, then walks back towards the gang.
ROBIN: She could be making a big mistake.
Robin hands his bow to Much as he walks past him.
Go back to the camp and stay there.
WILL: Robin.
MUCH: But...
ROBIN: Mounts a horse. That’s an order. Gallops off towards town.
MUCH: Robin!
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. WAR ROOM.
The Sheriff circles the map with a stick which has a small model of ship with a red cross on its white sail. Gisborne appears on the balcony overlooking the room below.
GISBORNE: My Lord!
SHERIFF: What do you think? Hastings? Portsmouth? Which south coast port will King Richard make his final fateful landing at? Hm?
GISBORNE: Well, we’ll know soon enough. Henry’s here, as I promised.
SHERIFF: Well done, Gisborne. Well done.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. COURTYARD.
The Sheriff and Gisborne come out of the main doors.
SHERIFF: Now, Henry. Goes down the steps to the coach. Henry of Lewes.
Marian, keeping out of sight, watches from the cloister. Arriving at the coach.
Welcome to my—
Henry falls to the floor of the coach, moaning softly. The Sheriff glares at Gisborne.
Get me my physician.
Gisborne turns to a soldier.
GISBORNE: Get the Sheriff ’s physician immediately.
Marian is astonished and starts to walk away unnoticed. The Sheriff looks around the courtyard.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. MARKETPLACE.
Robin, dressed as a lame man in a loosely woven cloak with a walking stick in his right hand and a wooden bowl in the left, and Marian, in a leather cloak, are whispering as they’ walk through the town. Robin limps along, leaning on the stick.
MARIAN: Why did you let the messenger through?
ROBIN: Has he talked?
MARIAN: No, not yet. He was taken ill. Look, Robin, I took a risk to find out his route, and you still let him through.
ROBIN: You can’t go back into the castle.
MARIAN: What?
ROBIN: Go to the forest...now. I’ll join you when I've silenced Henry.
MARIAN: The forest? Don’t be ridiculous.
ROBIN: You told me he’d travel by the North Road.
MARIAN: Yes.
ROBIN: And he didn't. Marian stops. Marian, I think I have a spy in my gang.
OPENING CREDITS
Robin and Marian continue walking.
MARIAN: What are you going to do?
Robin drops the bowl and pulls Marian into a marketplace stall.
ROBIN: I’ll silence Henry [puts his hand to the wall and leans into Marian] and then I’ll find the traitor in my own camp and silence him.
MARIAN: None of your men have been in the castle. I would have seen them.
ROBIN: Then somebody’s going out to meet them.
MARIAN: I’ll keep watch.
ROBIN: No. You’ll keep out of it.
MARIAN: No.
ROBIN: Marian, this is none of your business.
MARIAN: The King’s being betrayed right now because of your spy. It is my business.
ROBIN: Well, what if the spy’s told them about you and the Nightwatchman?
MARIAN: Then I’m dead anyway.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. SHERIFF’S QUARTERS.
The Sheriff enters. Blight bows and motions to him to come closer. Henry of Lewes is on the table with several leeches hanging off him.
SHERIFF: What are you doing, Blight. He’s worse.
BLIGHT: He’s calmer.
SHERIFF: Calmer?
The Sheriff pushes Henry’s head, which rolls limply.
You’re calming him to death.
BLIGHT: Medicine is a journey, my lord, not a destination. Treatments take as long as—
SHERIFF: Interrupting Do you seriously think I have time for your journey, Blight? A clue: Shakes his head quickly. Now, Gisborne, you find me a quack who knows what he’s doing.
The Sheriff turns and walks to the door. Blight follows.
BLIGHT: A quack? Sheriff, I am a man of learning. I give you science.
SHERIFF: Science? You have given me silence. I want this man to talk. Leaves.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN.
Robin doffs his cloak and drops his walking stick. He peers around a corner and is about to start walking when Much catches him up and taps his shoulder. Robin turns, catches Much’s arm and pushes Much into the wall, and his arm into his neck. He is surprised and disappointed to see him.
ROBIN: What are you doing here?
MUCH: What are you doing here? Tries to pull his arm away but can’t. I know you’re angry. You’re angry because Henry of Lewes got past us but you can’t just run off.
Robin lets him go.
ROBIN: Much, you disobeyed my instructions. I said wait at the camp.
MUCH: Gisborne has outwitted us. So what? His luck will run out. It has to. Facetiously: Otherwise we’ll be asking where he’s getting his information from. Chuckles slightly.
Robin glares at him, leaning on the wall, then hangs his head.
What?
Robin shakes his head slightly, then glances briefly at Much and leans his head back on the wall. Much steps around to face Robin.
You think he’s getting information.
Robin turns his head and says nothing, then looks back at Much.
From one of us.
Robin doesn't reply.
No. Master, surely some mistake. A traitor?
Robin looks down and scratches the back of his head.
Who?
Robin looks up at Much again with a slightly questioning look.
That’s why you sent us back to camp. Because you suspect.
Robin just leans on the wall, staring at Much.
You suspect me?
ROBIN: Much, I have to suspect everyone.
MUCH: That’s me. You suspect me.
ROBIN: Much, go back to the camp!
MUCH: Steps to be face-to-face. What do I have to do to prove my loyalty to you?
Robin rolls his eyes.
What?! Tell me! What?! I’ll chop off my own arms!
Robin raises his arms an steps back as Much wildly draws his sword.
Well, one arm, because once I've chopped that off then I wouldn't be able to chop off the other.
ROBIN: Smiles, amused at Much’s simpleness. If you’re true to me, I ask just one thing. Holds up one fi nger.
MUCH: Steps forward. You name it.
ROBIN: Nudges Much’s chin. Go back to the camp. Claps his hand on Much’s shoulder and leaves.
LOCKSLEY. MATILDA’S COTTAGE. INTERIOR.
Matilda picks up a sack onto her shoulder and carries it inside as Rosa, her very pregnant daughter, “oo”s and grabs her swollen belly. Matilda sets the sack down and goes over to her.
MATILDA: Come, come, come.
Matilda has Rosa sit on the bed.
There you go. Rubs Rosa’s belly. Oh, this baby’s just like his mother. Doesn't know up from down.
ROSA: Oh, again?
MATILDA: Oh, again. Don’t you bother yourself. I’ll turn him the right way up.
ROSA: How do you know it’s a boy?
MATILDA: Because I know. Stands and walks towards the door.
ROSA: But it hurts!
MATILDA: Stops at the door. Hurts? You don’t know pain. Try giving birth to him feet first. Then you’ll know what pain is.
Matilda opens the door and is immediately grabbed by Gisborne’s men.
EXTERIOR.
GISBORNE: to his men: Bring her medicines, everything.
to Matilda: Sheriff wants your services.
MATILDA: to the men: Get off me! My daughter!
GISBORNE: Your daughter can wait!
INTERIOR.
Rosa sits up as Gisborne’s man takes bags and bottles from a shelf.
ROSA: Mother! Mother!
EXTERIOR.
MATILDA: to Gisborne: Oh, you hairy pig-witted fox turd!
Gisborne turns his horse away.
I’ll pluck your eyeballs
GISBORNE: Ignoring Matilda (over her line): Let’s go!
MATILDA: from your bony skull and squelch them into cesspits!
ROSA: From inside: Mother!
MATILDA: As she is being dragged away. Rosa!
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. SHERIFF’S QUARTERS.
Blight slaps Henry’s cheek and holds something under his nose.
BLIGHT: Quietly: Speak! Speak, speak. Speak!
The Sheriff sits in his chair, bored. Gisborne arrives with Matilda, protesting.
MATILDA: Get off me!
GISBORNE: Keep still, woman.
MATILDA: Oh, you slimy little snot-head!
BLIGHT: Matilda.
MATILDA: Sees Blight. Blight! Ha! It’s the gravedigger’s best friend. The maggot’s mate.
SHERIFF: to Gisborne: Couldn't you find a civil-tongued wise woman?
GISBORNE: Apparently she’s the one civil-tongued wise men go to.
MATILDA: to the Sheriff, smiling: Hello, Baldy.
SHERIFF: Chuckles slightly. Do you know who I am? Stands. I am the Sheriff.
Matilda’s face falls.
I have a job for you.
MATILDA: If you were on fire, I would not damp you with my wet under-wrappings.
Blight chuckles, then stops as the Sheriff and Matilda glare at him.
SHERIFF: to Matilda: Cure this man or you die, anyone that you love and even some that you have a passing liking for.
MATILDA: I can’t stay here. My daughter’s expecting a baby.
SHERIFF: Your daughter can expect a corpse for a mother if you do not do as you are told!
BLIGHT: Well, I won’t stay if she lays one finger on my patient.
Matilda holds up her hand, fl icks one fi nger up and, looking at Blight, steps to Henry.
MATILDA: If I treat him, can I go?
SHERIFF: Do you think I want you cluttering up my castle?
Matilda swirls her fi nger, looking at Blight, puts it on Henry’s chest and raises her eyebrows at Blight. Blight grabs a rag, slams it to the fl oor and leaves. Matilda glares at him the whole way.
When he speaks, fetch me immediately.
The Sheriff and Gisborne leave. The guards close the door.
MATILDA: Well, we’ll get rid of these thing for starters. Pulls off a leech. Eugh.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. EXTERIOR CORRIDOR.
Marian is spying on Gisborne near the door to the dungeons. Her back is to the main doors and Gisborne is down the corridor to her left, when one of his men comes up to him.
SOLDIER: Sir, there’s a sign at the Trip Inn.
Marian quickly turns and runs ahead towards the main doors as Gisborne turns towards her. Gisborne comes around the corner and sees her.
GISBORNE: Marian. Where’s your guard?
MARIAN: Stepping into the cloister. Trying to play innocent: I don’t know. Must have lost him. Puts her back to a column.
GISBORNE: to his man: Watch Lady Marian.
MARIAN: Slightly flustered Is that really necessary?
GISBORNE: Steps to her. I don’t know. Is it?
MARIAN: Do you think I’m a threat?
GISBORNE: Gently. No. Walks towards the steps.
MARIAN: Jumps ahead of Gisborne and smiles. I was wondering if I could have a day away from the castle and the guards and accompany you?
GISBORNE: I’m on business.
MARIAN: Smiles mischievously Sounds interesting.
GISBORNE: Marian, it’s private.
MARIAN: Leans in to Gisborne. Sounds doubly interesting.
GISBORNE: Marian. No.
MARIAN: Sighs. Very well. But at least let me have a day unchaperoned.
GISBORNE: You’re up to something.
MARIAN: Smiles. Yes. I’m charming you so that I can have an hour or two without a goon on my back.
Nods to his man and the man leaves. Gisborne passes Marian, then turns back. Marian smiles in gratitude.
GISBORNE: But you stay in the castle. Leaves.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. SHERIFF’S QUARTERS.
Matilda shakes out a rag and puts it on Henry’s forehead. She holds her palm over Henry’s chest as if she’s sensing for something, sighs and picks up Henry’s right wrist. A small round swelling is there. Matilda spits on it, then sucks on it and spits out on the floor as the doors open. A guard steps in, followed by a man with a large round corked jar, his head down and hidden by his hat. It’s Robin in disguise, using his bow as a cane hidden under his cloak.
GUARD: Somebody order leeches?
MATILDA: Haven’t I seen enough bloodsuckers for one day? Rubs Henry’s arm. Mostly in charge.
ROBIN: Lovely specimens.
Matilda looks at him, eyes wide.
Hungry. Raises his head slightly so Matilda can see his face.
Playing along, Matilda sighs, puts down Henry’s arm and walks over to Robin, motioning him to come forward with her hand.
MATILDA: Let’s take a look.
Robin steps forward, limping on his “cane,” and hands her the jar. She holds it up, looking.
Hmm.
She sets it down on the table and nods to the guard. He leaves, closing the door behind him. Matilda takes off Robin’s hat and he smiles. Matilda grabs his head with both hands and kisses his forehead loudly. Robin chuckles.
Oh, Robin of Locksley. Strokes his cheeks with her thumbs.
Oh, what’s that beard? It’s neither grown nor shaven. Make up your mind. Pats his cheeks.
ROBIN: Hey, Matilda. Steps to Henry. Has this man talked? Sets down his bow.
MATILDA: No.
Robin and Matilda step to Henry’s side.
ROBIN: You can’t treat him.
MATILDA: Sighs. Good. Pats Robin’s back. Get me out of this dung heap. Walks around to the other side of Henry to collect a certain bottle. My Rosa has a baby on the way. Digs into the straw in a box. A boy, I’d wager, by the trouble he’s caused. Looks back at Robin. Twice turned himself upside down. You were worse, I seem to remember. Ah! Holds up the bottle, puts it in her pocket and walks back to Henry, facing Robin. This will relax her while I turn him. Come on, let’s go.
ROBIN: I have business here first.
MATILDA: She needs me now.
ROBIN: Do you know anything about this man?
MATILDA: Yes, he was stung by a bee. Look... points to his wrist.
ROBIN: What? This unwell... from a bee sting?
MATILDA: Well, it can happen. Nearly killed him. That and the leeches. But he’s all right now. Starts for the door.
ROBIN: Wait. Looks at the door. His name is Henry of Lewes. Now he’s come to tell the Sheriff where the King plans to land when he comes back to England. So... pulls out his knife... you should turn away.
Robin raises the knife but Matilda grabs his arm.
MATILDA: Stop. Has a dung beetle tunnelled into your ear and eaten your soul?
ROBIN: I’ll be quick!
MATILDA: A bee failed to kill him. A quack failed to kill him. I’ll be damned if a boy I delivered into this world Robin sighs, frustrated sneaks in and finishes off one of my patients.
ROBIN: Matilda, I can’t let him live to speak his treason.
MATILDA: Sighs. So it’s not his life you’re afraid of then, it’s his tongue.
ROBIN: Confused. So... shall we just... cut out his tongue then?
MATILDA: Exasperated: Oh, men!
Matilda gently slaps the side of Robin’s head.
Always think in a straight line.
Robin frowns at her.
I've got a better idea.
ROBIN: Can you silence him?
MATILDA: Well, long enough for you to think of something better than killing him, yes.
Robin puts away his knife.
I can muddle his brain for a day or two. Waving her fingers Confuse and baffle him. Turns to the supplies behind her. Now...
NOTTINGHAM TOWN.
Gisborne walks down the street. Marian follows him at a distance. She looks back for a moment and runs into a man, who grunts as he is hit.
MAN: Oh, sorry.
Marian ignores him and quickly ducks behind a merchant’s stand as Gisborne slowly turns around and raises his eyebrows, looking impatient. He turns back and continues on his way. Marian stands up and resumes following. Gisborne goes into the inn. Marian pulls her hood up, tucks her hair in, sighs, and follows him inside.
TRIP TO JERUSALEM INN. INTERIOR.
Gisborne meanders through the patrons to the serving maid, Joan.
GISBORNE: Well?
JOAN: Hasn't been in yet.
Gisborne steps past her and she follows as Marian enters and makes her way near them.
Must be held up.
GISBORNE: When he finally arrives, give him this for delivering Henry. Tell him it’s silver, not gold, because the goods were damaged.
Marian frowns at this conversation. Joan clears her throat. Gisborne holds up a coin to her, and she takes it.
JOAN: Thank you.
Gisborne leaves.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. SHERIFF’S QUARTERS.
Henry is stirring as Matilda crushes something with a mortar and pestle. Robin is listening at the door and rushes to Henry.
ROBIN: He’s waking. Matilda, quickly.
HENRY: Where am I?
Matilda goes to his side with a goblet.
What is it?
MATILDA: Here. She tips the cup to his lips. It’s mead.
Henry drinks, then Matilda lets his head fall back to hit the table and sets the goblet down.
Right. Job done. Let’s go.
ROBIN: Well, I have to know that it’s worked.
MATILDA: Oh, do you want the sun and the stars as well? We've done what we can.
ROBIN: Insistent He mustn't talk. If we spare his life, then we sacrifice the King’s.
SHERIFF: From outside the door Look lively, you pair of oafs!
Robin runs to the door, picking up his bow on the way, and slips in behind the opening door. The Sheriff walks in. Matilda is bewildered.
Is he awake?
MATILDA: Hmpf.
SHERIFF: Walks over to Henry. Henry...
HENRY: Mead. It was horrible. Wipes his lips with his hand.
SHERIFF: Taps Henry’s shoulder. Henry... my dear Henry...
HENRY: Castle.
SHERIFF: Yes, yes, yes. This is Nottingham Castle.
HENRY: I've come from the Holy Land.
SHERIFF: Yes.
HENRY: I’ll speak only to the Sheriff.
SHERIFF: Yes, yes. I am the Sheriff, the Sheriff of Nottingham.
HENRY: The King...
SHERIFF: Mm-hmm. Yes?
Robin points an arrow at Henry.
Which port will he arrive at?
Matilda has her hand on her chin and subtly frowns at Robin and flicks her hand like “put that away.”
HENRY: When the King returns from the Holy Land...
SHERIFF: Yes, yes, yes. Where will he land? What’s the King’s plan?
HENRY: He will land...
SHERIFF: Yes?
HENRY: I-I... I feel strange... I...
SHERIFF: Yes, yes.
HENRY: I feel—
SHERIFF: Interrupting Yes. Never mind how you feel, Henry, hm? What’s the King’s plan.
HENRY: The plan King’s... Plan king port...
Matilda glances at Robin.
SHERIFF: Yes, yes? Which port?
Robin still has his bow ready.
HENRY: Pork.
SHERIFF: Mouths questioningly Pork?
HENRY: I have come from the holy pork.
Robin smiles. The Sheriff is confused. Matilda raises her eyebrows at Robin with a sly grin.
SHERIFF: Whispers No, no. Which port?
HENRY: Pork! Holy pork!
The Sheriff, fists clenched and sputtering in frustration, looks at Matilda, who quickly hides her grin and drops her gaze from Robin. The Sheriff catches it and frowns. Matilda looks at Robin and points at him.
MATILDA: There’s someone there!
Robin is surprised. The Sheriff looks back and sees Robin.
SHERIFF: Guards!
A soldier steps in and brings his sword down behind the door but misses Robin. Robin hits him in the stomach with his bow, then as the soldier turns, he grabs the soldier’s sword and knees him in the stomach, then turns with the sword to face the next soldier. The Sheriff and Matilda step behind Henry’s table, watching. Robin blocks, then spins the sword and steps behind the soldier, pushing him into the first. Robin runs to Henry and shoves him off the table, running around it and past Matilda as the second soldier chases him. Matilda quickly hands him the bottle.
MATILDA: Quietly: Get this to Rosa. Loudly: Get out of here you rancid-faced outlaw!
SHERIFF: Don’t stand on him, you idiots! Get him up! Get him on the bed!
The soldiers put Henry back on the table.
Gently, gently, gently!
In Henry’s face: Which port? Which port?
Matilda looks out the door.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN.
Robin is walking briskly through the town away from the castle when Marian sees him.
MARIAN: Running after Robin: Robin! Catches up Robin. Henry?
ROBIN: He’s silenced, but only temporarily.
MARIAN: You were right. You have a spy.
Robin stops and turns around to face her.
ROBIN: How do you know?
MARIAN: I followed Gisborne to the Trip Inn. Whoever he was meeting didn't come, but a serving maid knew him and he left money with her. I heard them mention Henry but I couldn't hear any other names.
ROBIN: That’s payment for Henry’s arrival. Who is it, Marian? Who’d betray me?
A moment of silence, then Gisborne walks nearby.
There’s Gisborne.
Robin turns and leaves and Marian hurries in the other direction, pushing back her hood She turns down a lane where Gisborne is waiting against a wall, out of sight. Marian passes him.
GISBORNE: Marian.
MARIAN: Stops suddenly, thinking wildly, then turns around. Guy.
GISBORNE: You've been following me.
MARIAN: Me? Steps slowly towards Gisborne.
GISBORNE: Don’t deny it.
MARIAN: No, I—
GISBORNE: Interrupting I saw you by the stall earlier, now here. Coincidence?
MARIAN: I was only—
GISBORNE: Interrupting I don’t think so.
MARIAN: But I just—
GISBORNE: Interrupting You disobeyed me.
MARIAN: Guy, please.
Robin appears at a distance behind a post, but within earshot.
Let me explain. You don’t understand. Punish me, but do not punish my father.
GISBORNE: Punish you? Why would I punish you?
Marian realises she said too much and thinks quickly.
What have you been doing?
MARIAN: Er, forgive me. You were right. I disobeyed you. I just wanted to spend time with you.
GISBORNE: Really?
MARIAN: Yes.
GISBORNE: Well, I’m honoured, Marian.... quietly in her face... but I told you I was on business.
MARIAN: Well, it won’t happen again.
GISBORNE: Offers Marian his arm. Shall we?
They walk off to the castle as Robin frowns at them.
SHERWOOD FOREST. OUTLAWS’ CAMP.
Much returns, visibly upset. The others are going about their business as usual, suspecting nothing. Much takes off his cloak and swings it down. He goes into his kitchen and slaps at the dried herbs hanging there. Allan is sitting up on the “roof.”
ALLAN: What’s your problem?
Much doesn't answer.
Hey? Did you speak to Robin then or what?
MUCH: Quietly, keeping his back turned to Allan Why do you want to know?
WILL: Steps to Much. We want to know what’s going on. What’s the plan?
DJAQ: Did the messenger get through to the castle?
WILL: Yeah, is Robin going to kill him?
MUCH: Turns around to face them. Like to know his plans, do you?
Allan stares.
What’s the Sheriff and Gisborne’s plan?
WILL: What?
MUCH: I mean, is there even a Henry? Or is it a trap?
WILL: What?
Allan comes down.
DJAQ: What’s going on?
MUCH: In Will’s face How much do they pay you?
LITTLE JOHN: Enters with an armful of wood. Angrily: Pay who?
MUCH: There’s a spy... in the camp! One of you [pointing around] is a spy! And Robin knows. Points with both hands. You’re done for!
Djaq stares at Much in disbelief.
ALLAN: What? How does he know?
MUCH: Faces Allan. It’s obvious! I mean, Gisborne’s always five or six steps ahead of us!
WILL: Are you calling me a traitor?
LITTLE JOHN: Steps up. Traitor? Tr— Scoffs and walks off in disgust.
Will stares at Allan.
ALLAN: What are you looking at me for?
WILL: Scoffs. Well, you’re the one who tried to persuade me to steal from Robin. You know that time we thought the King was coming?
MUCH: That’s right! Points at Allan. Traitor!
ALLAN: We thought about it. We decided against it, didn't we?
Stretches out his arm.
WILL: ’Cause I said not to!
Will slaps away Allan’s arm.
LITTLE JOHN: Comes back. Stop it now!
MUCH: Yes, if anyone’s going to kill the traitor, it’s going to be me.
Djaq is thinking.
ALLAN: What makes you so high and mighty? He obviously doesn't trust you either, does he, or why has he sent you back here?
Much charges at Allan but Little John separates them. Will turns away in disbelief.
LITTLE JOHN: Now stop it, the pair of you! Off him! Stop it!
An arrow sails overhead. They all look up.
Robin.
The gang all run off in the direction from which the arrow came.
ALONG THE ROAD FROM LOCKSLEY.
Robin climbs down from the seat of a wagon as the gang arrive.
MUCH: Master!
Robin walks to the back of the wagon where Rosa is sitting, leaning against the side, holding her belly and moaning.
ALLAN: What is going on?
Djaq climbs into the back of the wagon from the front.
ROBIN: We’re taking her to the camp.
LITTLE JOHN: What, our camp?
ROBIN: This is Rosa, Matilda’s daughter.
ALLAN: So much for it being a secret.
ROBIN: So much for a lot of things being secret. Gently: Djaq, the baby’s the wrong way round.
ROSA: Do you know how to turn it?
DJAQ: Hesitates. Let’s get you to a bed, shall we?
ROSA: You don’t, do you?
Turns towards Robin to get out.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. SHERIFF’S QUARTERS.
Henry is sitting, dazed, on the table. Blight is rubbing his hands vigorously with a rag. The Sheriff walks slowly to him, then looks at Matilda staring with hatred at Blight. The Sheriff walks back to Henry.
SHERIFF: Yells at Blight Get on with it!
Blight, startled, nods and steps to Henry. He feels under his chin.
HENRY: Your Majesty.
Blight steps back.
SHERIFF: He’s not the King.
HENRY: Looks at the Sheriff Mother.
SHERIFF: Mouths Mother?
MATILDA: His brain. Bled to dried pigskin by his leeches.
Blight frowns at Henry, then sees the Sheriff watching him and nods in deference to the Sheriff. Blight steps behind the table and picks up a bottle. Matilda fl inches. Then Blight picks up the mortar and pestle from the fl oor and sniffs the pestle. He gently tastes it, then spits it out dramatically.
BLIGHT: She’s poisoned him.
The Sheriff looks at Matilda.
MATILDA: Rubbish. I haven’t given him anything.
BLIGHT: I hate to tell tales... steps to the Sheriff... but I've asked around and rumour has it that she delivered the baby Robin into this world.
They both turn to look at her.
MATILDA: to Blight Pig. Canker. Blight by name, blight by nature.
SHERIFF: Realising. “Help, help! There’s someone there!” Oh, nice try. Steps slowly to Matilda.
BLIGHT: You poisoned him, didn't you?
MATILDA: No! I just... gave him something to help him sleep.
SHERIFF: Well, you can give him something to wake him up, can’t you?
MATILDA: No.
SHERIFF: There are wrong answers... and there are right answers. That was a wrong answer. Snaps his fingers.
SHERWOOD FOREST. OUTLAWS’ CAMP.
The gang stand in the camp, Robin down the steps below.
WILL: We need to know who the traitor is.
Robin sighs and glares at Much.
MUCH: I’m sorry. Not the sort of secret I can keep!
Little John walks over. Robin hangs his head.
ROBIN: Let’s just deal with Rosa first.
LITTLE JOHN: Tell us, Robin!
WILL: There’ll be people like Rosa who need our help every day, but we’re not a gang if you... points at Robin angrily... suspect us!
ROBIN: All right. Steps forward. It’s true. One of you is betraying us.
Djaq steps behind Allan.
You’re meeting Gisborne and you’re selling our secrets.
Sighs heavily.
MUCH: Not me.
ALLAN: It’s not me, either.
WILL: Well, it’s not me.
LITTLE JOHN: Not me.
DJAQ: It’s not me.
ROBIN: Stop this now! If the guilty man or woman confesses right here, I’ll listen. Tell me what Gisborne said, what he offered. Step forward now. You have one chance.
Silence for a moment, then Much can’t stand it.
MUCH: I will not be treated with equal suspicion! Storms off.
Will leans on a post. Robin shakes his head. Allan is looking away.
ROBIN: Well, whoever you are, you've made your choice. Steps inside between Allan and Little John. And I will find you out. Continues inside.
Djaq sits behind Rosa, trying to reach her belly. Rosa throws her off. Djaq looks behind her at Little John sitting nearby, thinking, then decides.
DJAQ: John.
Djaq stands up and goes over to him, squats in front of him. Little John sits helplessly, like an expectant father.
Help me turn the baby.
LITTLE JOHN: No.
DJAQ: Glances at Rosa. I have worked in the battlefield. All men. I have never treated this before.
LITTLE JOHN: Well, neither have I.
Will, outside the camp, is chopping at a log. Allan and Robin are making more arrows.
Djaq stares at Little John, and he reluctantly stands up and follows her to Rosa. Rosa looks up at him.
May I?
Rosa looks at Djaq, who nods. Rosa nods to Little John. Little John dusts off his hands, grabs Rosa’s feet and roughly dumps her on her back. He hesitantly holds his hand over her belly, then touches her, surprised at how it feels.
Oh!
ROSA: What?
LITTLE JOHN: It’s the head. Talks to her belly. Hello, little one. Hello. You’re the wrong way round. You need to turn, baby.
Little John pushes and twists on her belly. Rosa breathes harder, then cries out a bit. Robin looks up.
Oh! It moved.
ROSA: That’s it. That’s right.
Little John pushes and twists more, Rosa squealing as the gang stare.
DJAQ: How did you do that?
Little John shakes his head. Rosa relaxes.
ROSA: Thank you. Thank you.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. COURTYARD.
Matilda, gagged, is escorted down the steps by two soldiers. The Sheriff, Gisborne and Blight follow.
SHERIFF: My Lords!
Marian walks over to Gisborne standing near the cloister.
Matilda, here, somehow managed to bring a patient of hers back from the dead.
BLIGHT: Certified by my good self, dead.
SHERIFF: So, what do we have here, hm? Do we have a healer?
MARIAN: to Gisborne, quietly What’s happening?
Gisborne holds a fi nger to his lips.
SHERIFF: Or do we have something else? Hm? A necromancer? Devil worshipper? The Sheriff grabs Matilda’s dress. A witch!
MARIAN: She’s not a witch.
SHERIFF: So, perhaps a ducking in Locksley pond would calm all our nerves.
MARIAN: Guy, you know she’s not a witch.
Gisborne roughly grabs Marian and pushes her back into the corridor.
GISBORNE: Marian, say nothing. These allegations spread by association.
MARIAN: The ducking stool’s a death sentence, you know that.
GISBORNE: There’s nothing you can do for her! Turns to leave.
MARIAN: Did I leave you to die when you were being drowned? Gisborne leaves. Guy! Guy!
Marian tries to follow him but one of Gisborne’s men intercepts her.
BLIGHT: to Matilda, quietly: You could avoid all this, Matilda. Tell us the antidote.
Matilda looks at the Sheriff, then Blight, then nods. Blight removes her gag. They both stand in front of her, expectant. Matilda leans into them.
MATILDA: Boiled Sheriff ’s brains... with parsley. Raises her eyebrows, smiling.
SHERIFF: Pauses. Ah-huh. Turns around. To Locksley!
SHERWOOD FOREST. OUTLAWS’ CAMP.
Rosa cries out in pain. Djaq is with her, holding her hand, but her mind is far away. Will sits on a boulder, trying not to hear. Much stares into the fi re. Allan walks over to Djaq, with a bowl.
ALLAN: Djaq? Holds out the bowl.
DJAQ: Shakes her head. Later.
ALLAN: You all right?
Rosa relaxes.
DJAQ: There is a spy in the camp. How can anything be all right?
ALLAN: Well, he probably knows he’s make a mistake now.
DJAQ: Staring out at nothing. He had his chance to confess.
Rosa moans.
ALLAN: Maybe he’s stuck. People get stuck, you know.
DJAQ: Your brother said he was stuck. He refused to change and he hanged for it.
ALLAN: He was an idiot.
DJAQ: No! He was a good man underneath it, and you saw that.
Rosa moans as another contraction overwhelms her.
And I believe Robin would see it, too, if the spy confessed... and begged forgiveness... and changed his ways. Looks at Allan. I believe you’re a good man, Allan A Dale.
Allan walks away as Rosa sits up and screams. Much looks up helplessly.
MARIAN: From a distance in the forest: Robin!
Robin stands up.
Robin!
THE ROAD FROM LOCKSLEY.
Robin runs as fast as he can to the road and waits, breathless, for Marian to arrive.
As soon as she sees Robin: Robin! Matilda! The Sheriff knows she helped you. She’s refusing to tell them how to wake Henry up and they’re having her ducked as a witch!
ROBIN: When?
MARIAN: Now! At Locksley pond! Call your men. I have to go before I’m missed!
Djaq appears on the top of the rise by the road.
DJAQ: Robin, the baby’s coming!
MARIAN: Shocked Baby?!
ROBIN: It’s Matilda’s grandchild!
MARIAN: Turning her horse around Robin, hurry! Hurry!
Robin runs back to camp as Marian gallops towards Locksley.
OUTLAWS’ CAMP.
Robin and Djaq run back to camp.
ROBIN: Matilda needs us. Djaq, you stay with Rosa. Everybody else, with me, now.
Little John gets his coat as Rosa sits up, alarmed.
ROSA: What’s happened?
ROBIN: The Sheriff’s happened.
The gang are about to leave.
ROSA: John? Can you stay?
Little John looks at Robin, who nods. The rest leave for Locksley.
LOCKSLEY.
Matilda, with a soldier on each side, is dragged towards the pond. The ducking stool is suspended from several connected poles from the shore by the church. A dais is set up facing the pond between it and the manor; on it are three chairs: the Sheriff’s high-backed one, and another to either side. A small table with a bowl of fruit stands next to the Sheriff’s chair. A few nobles sit on either side of the dais, watching. Blight stands behind the nobles to the Sheriff’s left. The Sheriff stands, waiting. Henry walks towards the Sheriff, Gisborne following.
SHERIFF: Mouth full, to Gisborne: Has he said anything sensible yet?
Gisborne shakes his head.
Henry is set into a chair next to the nobles as Matilda is put into the ducking chair and tied to it. The Sheriff addresses the audience.
Lords, ladies, peasants.
HENRY: Presents.
The Sheriff glances at him, and is about to speak again when Henry interrupts again.
Pheasants. Beats the chair’s arm.
SHERIFF: Have a look at this noble man. He returned from the dead possessed! The witch shall be ducked!
Matilda’s chair is raised and moved over the water.
If she dies, it proves the devil had abandoned her and she shall be buried on consecrated ground.
HENRY: Constipated ground.
SHERIFF: Glances at Henry. If she lives, showing the devil still to be in her, she shall be burnt alive! Hard to know which one to hope for. Chuckles.
MATILDA: Rosa! My Rosa!
SHERIFF: Sighs and lowers his hand. Down she goes!
Matilda sucks in her breath as the chair is lowered towards the pond.
Deep breath. Sucks in his breath mockingly.
Matilda goes under the water. The Sheriff pops a grape into his mouth.
Oh, what lovely grapes, Gisborne.
A minute passes. The Sheriff raises his hand and Matilda is pulled up.
MATILDA: Sucks in air and coughs. You weasel-faced whore’s son!
SHERIFF: Sorry, who, Robin? No, Robin’s not here! Laughs.
Marian slowly arrives on her horse.
And three, two, one.
Gisborne sees Marian and quickly stands up as Matilda is lowered.
Deep breath. Deep breath!
Blight is thoroughly enjoying the moment as Marian stares sadly at the bubbling pond.
SHERWOOD FOREST. OUTLAWS’ CAMP.
Rosa screams in pain. Djaq is concerned.
DJAQ: Looks back at Little John. There’s something...
Little John puts his hand on Djaq’s shoulder, nodding.
ROSA: Screams. What’s happening?
Little John strokes her hair.
LITTLE JOHN: It’s fine. Your husband. Is he away?
ROSA: Falls on her back. The wars.
LITTLE JOHN: He’ll be so proud.
He strokes her hair as she moans. Djaq smiles.
ROSA: What’s your wife’s name?
LITTLE JOHN: Alice.
ROSA: So you've done this before... with Alice?
LITTLE JOHN: Shakes his head. No.
ROSA: Why is it so hard?
LITTLE JOHN: No. I—I was an outlaw in the forest. Alice was alone.
Rosa gears up for another pain.
DJAQ: Push now!
Rosa screams.
LOCKSLEY.
Matilda is under the water.
SHERIFF: Humming Bum, bum, bum.
The Sheriff motions down to the men controlling the chair and giggles as Matilda is lowered down a bit more. The bubbles stop. The Sheriff raises his hand and Matilda is pulled up, her head hanging. There is a long moment as Marian, still sitting on her horse, shakes her head sadly and turns away before Matilda flips her head up and roars. Everybody jumps.
MATILDA: I curse you! May snakes crawl up your nose holes and feed on your tiny brain!
SHERIFF: Down! Down, down!
Matilda is lowered, teeth clenched and glaring at the Sheriff.
The Sheriff watches her go down.
Under the water, Robin swims to Matilda and holds a thin leather pipe to her lips. Matilda sees it and takes it into her mouth.
ROBIN: Breathe slowly.
On the bank near the trees, between the church and the manor, out of sight of the Sheriff, Allan finishes feeding the pipe to Robin, lays it down on the ground and joins Much and Will a few paces away. Will is pumping air into the pipe with a fi replace bellows.
ALLAN: You know, it’s going to be difficult to take him—Henry.
WILL: Can’t we just kill him?
ALLAN: No. Draw attention to Robin, won’t we? Put him in danger.
MUCH: We bide our time and wait till they’re distracted. Unless, of course, one of you two’s informed Gisborne.
WILL: Slaps Much’s shoulder. Oi! Keep your accusations to yourself !
MUCH: You keep pumping!
Will resumes pumping.
SHERIFF: Let’s lift up the carcass. Giggles. Ten...
The nobles join in the countdown.
... nine... eight... seven... six... five...
Will and Allan silently run up behind Henry’s chair, one on either side. Marian is now sitting in the chair to the Sheriff’s left.
... four... three... two... and a half !... one... and a half !... and bring her up!
Matilda’s chair is raised, empty except for some cloth on the seat. The nobles and peasants step forward, stunned, as Allan and Will tip back Henry’s chair and take him away.
Marian tries to hide her smile from Gisborne.
Meanwhile, Much helps Matilda out of the pond and wraps his cloak around her.
SHERIFF: What the devil is that, Blight?
BLIGHT: I... I suspect they may be her under-wrappings, my Lord.
SHERIFF: Shut up. Shut up!
Robin crawls out of the pond.
Arrest... Turns around towards the nobles. Arrest... Sees Henry’s empty tipped chair. Gisborne! Henry’s gone! Gisborne! Henry’s gone!
GISBORNE: Guards! Find him!
SHERWOOD FOREST. OUTLAWS’ CAMP.
Robin leads Matilda to the camp. Allan and Much, one under each arm supporting Henry, help him along and then tie him up nearby. As they approach the camp Matilda cries out for her daughter.
MATILDA: Rosa! Where’s my Rosa!
Once inside, she sees Rosa sleeping and rushes over to her.
Oh, Rosa!
Matilda brushes Rosa’s hair from her face as Rosa wakes up.
ROSA: Mother?
MATILDA: Where’s the little lad? Tell me the lad’s all right.
ROSA: Shakes her head. No lad.
MATILDA: Thinking the baby has died. No lad?
Matilda hangs her head. Robin looks sad.
ROSA: She’s a girl. Glances over at Little John.
Matilda looks up to see Little John cuddling the baby.
LITTLE JOHN: Good lungs she has.
Matilda smiles and laughs and stands up.
DJAQ: Not a moment’s peace.
MATILDA: Well, let’s see if a damp grandmother can’t set her off again.
Little John reluctantly gives up the baby to Matilda. Robin looks on sadly, wishing he could have a family, too.
Oh! Oh, there my little... oh? What’s her name?
ROSA: Thinks a moment. Alice. I’m going to call her Alice. Looks at Little John.
Little John is slightly embarrassed and also a bit proud. A tear falls from his eye.
MATILDA: Alice.
Much finishes tying Henry’s feet near a large tree root as Allan returns to camp. Robin and Will go to check up on Henry.
ALLAN: to Robin: Still in the land of fairies.
WILL: What you gonna do with him?
ROBIN: I’ll banish him.
WILL: You should kill him. A traitor to the King doesn't deserve to live.
ALLAN: Kill him?
Little John helps Matilda, carrying a crying Alice, along the rough trail on the ridge past Henry where Robin is standing. Rosa and Djaq follow.
ROBIN: Congratulations, Grandma.
Matilda caresses Robin’s cheek as she walks past.
WILL: Oi, Much! Look!
Much stabs his knife into the ground near Henry’s feet and stands.
MATILDA: Much, meet Alice!
Matilda holds her up for Much to see, then the rest of the gang start to escort Matilda and Rosa back to their wagon. Henry opens his eyes and sees his guard off-guard. He grabs Much’s knife with his bound feet. Robin sees him out of the corner of his eye and pulls an arrow from his quiver. Henry holds the knife up to his bound hands and cuts the rope at his feet. He quickly stands and grabs Much from behind, around his neck, as Robin quickly loads his bow.
ROBIN: Put it down, Henry!
Everybody turns around to look.
HENRY: Say you don’t kill any more.
ROBIN: For the King I kill.
HENRY: The King’s finished! The Sheriff, Prince John, the Black Knights, they’ll win.
MUCH: Sputters Robin.
An arrow flies and hits Henry in the chest just above Much’s shoulder. Robin lowers his bow. Henry slowly relaxes his grip on Much, who flings Henry’s arm over his head. Henry falls backward and rolls down the hill, dead.
ROBIN: Not today, they won’t.
Much rubs his neck, angry at himself. The others stare.
SHERWOOD FOREST.
Robin and Will bury Henry in the forest. Will piles rocks over the body while Robin squats by the head.
ROBIN: Can I trust you, Will?
WILL: Steps to Robin. Of course.
ROBIN: Stands. I need your help.
WILL: Earnestly Anything.
ROBIN: Marian saw a serving maid speaking to Gisborne at the Trip. Now she’ll know who our spy is.
Allan, Djaq, Much and Little John approach through the trees.
And I can go to the Trip, find the maid, and make her tell me who the traitor is. You go back to the camp at sundown.
WILL: Where am I going?
ROBIN: Sighs. This is gonna hurt.
Will is puzzled, then Robin punches him. Will falls back and puts his hand to his chin. Robin pulls Will’s hand back out of the way and punches him again.
ALLAN: What’s he doing?
Robin punches Will a third time and Will falls to the ground.
Robin!
MUCH: Master!
The others start running towards them. Robin stands over Will and grabs his tag.
ROBIN: to Will, quietly Sundown, remember?
Robin pulls off the tag and walks to meet the others. Will scrambles to his feet and runs into the trees.
MUCH: I knew it was him. I knew it was him!
Robin holds up the tag.
LITTLE JOHN: In disbelief But Will?!
Robin nods.
ALLAN: Eyes wide. No.
MUCH: I knew it!
ALLAN: Robin...
ROBIN: Will’s the spy. The subject’s closed.
LITTLE JOHN: Will?
Robin turns away.
Robin, I do not believe...
DJAQ: Steps up to Robin. Robin, I need to speak with you.
Allan stands with his hands behind his head, astonished.
ROBIN: Not now.
DJAQ: Believe me, Robin, I need—
ROBIN: Interrupting No you don’t, Djaq! Trust me. Will’s gone.
Little John shakes his head.
And that’s the end of it. Now, I have to go to the castle. I think he had a go-between.
LITTLE JOHN: At the castle?
ROBIN: Yes, at the Trip. Marian saw a serving girl receiving money from Gisborne. I have to go to meet Marian to find out exactly what Gisborne knows.
MUCH: We’ll come.
ROBIN: No. No, I’m safer on my own. Meanwhile, you lot have to scatter until I find out whether Gisborne knows about the camp. I’ll go the Trip at sundown. Come back here after that. I’ll tell you what I know.
Robin pats Much’s shoulder as he runs off towards Nottingham. Allan and Little John watch him go.
MUCH: What are we going to do?
ALLAN: You heard him. We scatter.
Little John nods in agreement and the three head off in different directions, Djaq concerned, because she suspects Robin has banished the wrong man.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. TRIP TO JERUSALEM INN. INTERIOR. AFTERNOON.
The inn is deserted. Allan walks in.
JOAN: You’re late. Allan follows her in. I was going to keep your money back.
Joan retrieves the bag from inside the fi replace. She shakes it as she walks over to Allan and tosses it on the table.
Delighted: Silver, not gold.
Allan is nervous.
ALLAN: You’re gonna tell Gisborne to keep this money. I’m not doing this any more, all right? I've changed.
JOAN: It’s a bit late for a conscience, isn't it?
ALLAN: Yeah, very late.
An arrow hits the money bag under Allan’s hand. Joan gasps and steps back, frightened. Allan, knowing who it is, steps back slowly.
Robin.
Robin enters with his bow and an angry look. He slowly walks over to Allan and puts his bow on a table as he passes. He leans on Allan’s table.
You’re early.
ROBIN: to Joan, but looking at Allan Leave us.
ALLAN: Stay there.
ROBIN: Get out!
Joan swings the towel over her shoulder and walks out, closing the door behind her.
Slowly, firmly, in Allan’s face: I need to talk to my spy.
Robin stays in Allan’s face a moment, then stands and walks towards the fi replace.
ALLAN: What was that with Will? You banished Will.
ROBIN: Turns around. It was an act! Steps back towards Allan. Only she knew who was guilty. And I knew the spy would want to come here before me to cover his tracks. For all I knew [leans on Allan’s table] it could have been Will standing there.
Allan leans back on a post.
But it’s not... is it? Steps around the table to Allan. Quietly: It’s you.
ALLAN: Robin, it was over. You ask her. I made a decision.
ROBIN: Then what’s this? Glances at the money bag.
ALLAN: No. I was giving it back.
ROBIN: Nods slightly. So you betray me, you betray yourself, you betray your King, for what? For a few silver coins. What have you told Gisborne, Allan?
Allan looks aside.
Huh?
ALLAN: Hesitantly I... Nothing, really.
ROBIN: Does he know about the camp?
ALLAN: Earnestly No!
ROBIN: No? Does he know about Marian?
ALLAN: No.
ROBIN: More lies?
ALLAN: No! This was the last time, I promise... and I was wrong. But he captured me, Robin, tortured me. I had no choice—
Robin grabs his shoulders, interrupting him.
ROBIN: Everything is a choice! Everything we do! Walks towards the fireplace.
ALLAN: That’s easy for you to say, though, isn't it?
Robin turns to face him.
Eh? You get the glory, you get the girl, everyone loves you. Then when the King comes back you’ll have lands, property, a wife. Everything. And what will I have?
Robin walks back to him, holding his temper.
You are always in the sun, Robin, and I’m always in the shade.
Robin pushes Allan up against the post.
ROBIN: Is that meant to be an excuse? Huh?
ALLAN: Give me another chance... please. I wouldn't have let Gisborne hurt any of us. I've never told him anything like that.
ROBIN: Harmless lies? Innocent betrayals? They don’t exist, Allan!
ALLAN: Robin, I've changed. How can I get you to believe that?
ROBIN: Shakes his head. You can’t. And the funny thing is... you might be telling the truth.
ALLAN: I am!
ROBIN: And how am I supposed to believe you any more? Lets Allan go.
ALLAN: Robin, I swear to you on my life.
Robin pulls out his knife and holds under Allan’s chin.
Don’t kill me. Please.
Robin jerks the knife and severs the string of Allan’s tag. Allan winces, expecting to be killed. Robin puts his hand on Allan’s shoulder.
ROBIN: Quietly You’re lucky I've left you with a life to swear upon. Never, never let me set eyes on you again.
Robin stares at Allan a moment, then leaves, picking up his bow on the way out.
SHERWOOD FOREST.
Robin returns. Little John, Much and Djaq catch him up.
LITTLE JOHN: Are we safe?
Robin keeps walking and doesn't reply, looking around.
ROBIN: Will?!
Will pushes some saplings aside and appears. Much draws his sword.
MUCH: Will!
Robin pulls back on Much’s shoulder.
ROBIN: It’s all right! It’s all right. It wasn't him.
Will glares at Robin.
MUCH: What?
Djaq goes over to Will and touches his cheek, but he nods, smiling, and gently pulls down her arm.
ROBIN: It was a trap. I lied to you. I’m sorry. I had to lure the spy. Holds up the tag, then tosses it aside. It was Allan.
DJAQ: Is he alive?
Robin nods and starts walking. The rest follow.
Where?
ROBIN: He’s gone.
LITTLE JOHN: Allan? Why?
ROBIN: For money, John. Why else?
DJAQ: I believe he could have changed.
MUCH: You knew it was him?
DJAQ: I didn't know. I guessed.
MUCH: I knew it was him. Sheathes sword. Knew it was Allan.
Robin stops as the other go on.
ROBIN: Will... do you forgive me?
WILL: Puts his hand on Robin’s shoulder, nodding. It worked.
ROBIN: And the rest of you?
A horse neighs in the forest. A wagon is heard rumbling.
MUCH: Travellers on the North Road.
ROBIN: Right. Are you with me?
Will nods. Much holds out his arms like “why not?” Djaq smiles. Little John taps his staff on the ground.
Yeah? Well, then let’s go.
Robin runs between them uphill and the gang follow.
END OF EPISODE FIVE.
