SHERWOOD FOREST.
Two men walk along a forest path. Much, Will and Allan wait to ambush them, camouflaged in leaves and their arms and faces painted like tree bark. Robin, hidden behind a tree in a cloak of leaves, watches their progress, turning himself around behind the tree. One of the men stops, sensing something wrong as a bird suddenly flutters. He hears and sees nothing, and continues on. Will stands by a tree, also in a cloak of leaves, his arm raised parallel to the trunk. He peeks out from behind his hand, watching. Much lies on the ground, hidden amongst the leaves. The two strangers start to climb a rise towards what looks like a dead tree trunk (but it is really Little John and Djaq in disguise) as Allan raises his head, smiles, picks up a rock and throws it behind them. The two men turn around as Little John stands up, holding Djaq on his shoulders with small tree branches on her head. Together they look like a tall furry monster and they roar and yell at the men as they turn forward again. The men turn and run, frightened, as Little John and Djaq laugh and Allan chases them. Robin, standing on a boulder, aims an arrow as Much stands and yells, diverting the men’s path towards Robin. Robin lets his arrow fly, cutting a rope. A weighted basket falls, lifting a net into the path of the men. The two strangers run right into it. Much stops chasing them.
MUCH: This is an ambush!
ROBIN: Oi! A little of what you have could be a lot for the poor of Nottingham!
LUKE: We are the poor!
DAN: Let them take what they need, Lukey!
Will catches up the gang and stops, recognising the voice.
WILL: Dad? Will goes to hug the men through the net. Dad!
DAN: Will!
WILL: It’s me!
Will, Dan and Luke laugh at the strange but happy reunion. Much comes over to greet Dan. The gang all smile except for Djaq, who is confused.
DJAQ: Will, you know these people?
WILL: Still laughing. I’d like you to meet my father, Dan Scarlett, and my little brother, Lukey.
Luke steps forward and puts his hands on Will’s shoulders.
LUKE: I’m not little.
WILL: My big little brother, Lukey.
Robin, smiling, comes down to join them.
OPENING CREDITS
The gang walk back to camp with Dan and Luke. Will and Luke get into a light shoving match as Robin talks to Dan.
ROBIN: So what brings you back to Nottingham?
DAN: We’ve come to take Will back to Scarborough with us.
Will abandons his play and steps up to Dan.
WILL: What? Dan stops. What about asking me if I want to come?
Robin pauses, looking back, then walks on.
DAN: We’re your family! Your auntie Annie and us.
WILL: Well, I’ve got a family here, too, Dad.
LUKE: We were sure you’d come and find us. Didn’t you miss us?
WILL: Yeah, but... I’m with Robin now. Follows Robin.
DAN: Mimics: “I’m with Robin now.” Son, you’ve got your whole life ahead of you! Follows Will.
Luke sighs and follows, too.
SHERWOOD FOREST. OUTLAWS’ CAMP.
Robin sits at the table writing. He dips his quill repeatedly into the ink, thinking, halfway through a message. He adds something as the gang cleans up from their disguises and adventures. Allan and Will pick out paint from under their fingernails, Allan debating whether or not to question Robin, then steps over to him.
ALLAN: What’s that?
ROBIN: Looks up. Facetiously: It’s a letter.
ALLAN: Yeah, but to who?
ROBIN: Seriously, without looking up: It’s to the King. Drops the quill into the inkwell.
ALLAN: What about?
ROBIN: The Sheriff and the Black Knights.
ALLAN: Who’s delivering it?
ROBIN: An old friend. Looks up, smiling, knowing Allan will make fun of the name. Roger of Stoke.
ALLAN: Poshly: Roger.
Robin laughs as Little John steps between them with the net.
LITTLE JOHN: Much.
ALLAN: Where are you meeting him?
ROBIN: Impatiently. How many questions have you got, Allan?
ALLAN: Yeah, all right, I’m just curious.
ROBIN: Bends back over his note. I’m meeting him in Nottingham after the money drop.
Djaq passes Allan and Much hands him a money bag. Dan stands looking at the structure.
DAN: This craftsmanship is good.
Allan passes between Luke and Will.
WILL: See, I’ve got a life here.
DAN: All that says to me is that you could earn a decent living in Scarborough.
WILL: Slams down his rag. Dad, I’m an outlaw! I stand up for what I believe in.
DAN: What? And I don’t?
WILL: Shakes his head. It doesn’t matter.
DAN: Yes, it does. Tell me.
WILL: You let the Sheriff cut off your hand!
LUKE: That was to save me and you!
WILL: Puts his hand on Luke’s shoulder. I know. I didn’t mean that.
DAN: Hurt: Yes, you did. Sits down, wrapping his cloak around him. Robin is watching the exchange, arms crossed. Luke walks out past Dan.
WILL: Robin, can you tell my dad I’m a grown man now. I make my own decisions.
ROBIN: Gently: Well, a real man listens to advice, Will.
Will nods and smiles in frustration, thinking he has no allies, and walks off. Robin watches him.
DAN: Thanks, Robin.
ROBIN: But Will does have a life here. Will stops and looks back. And you should see it before you take him away from it. Come to Nottingham tomorrow. Let us show you what we do.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. NIGHT.
In the upstairs window of a house, Sarah looks out at the horseman walking through the street.
SARAH: : Look! It’s him! It is the Nightwatchman.
Below, Jess opens the door. The Nightwatchman leans down from his horse and hands her a bag. Sarah runs downstairs and helps Jess open the bag.
Let’s see. What did he bring?
Looks up at the Nightwatchman.
God bless you, Nightwatchman.
The Nightwatchman walks on to the next house and hands out a bag. At the end of the street, he stops, pushes back his hood and pulls off the mask.
JOSEPH : “And that night, the angel of the Lord went back and forth.” Nods and walks his horse forward.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. SHERIFF’S QUARTERS. THE NEXT MORNING.
The Sheriff looks in the mirror and pulls out his tooth.
SHERIFF: Hmm. The Sheriff turns aside and puts the tooth into the third skull of a row of three, and the door opens. Ah. Looks at the three skulls, deciding. The Nightwatchman.
So, how was your evening’s generosity?
The Sheriff pulls a tooth from the first skull, grins and turns into Joseph’s face.
JOSEPH: In the Sheriff ’s face. Satisfying. They all took the bait, like rats.
SHERIFF: Smiling. Good. Steps aside. Shouldn’t you be, er... measuring [turns into Joseph’s face again] or whatever it is that you do?
JOSEPH: Staying in the Sheriff ’s face. Scientific analysis.
SHERIFF: Quite, hm.
JOSEPH: Well, I’m waiting to be accidentally caught in the quarantine.
SHERIFF: Ah, yes. Chuckles and puts in his tooth. The er... pestilent poor of Pitt Street. Off you go.
Joseph leaves as Gisborne raises his eyebrows.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. DUNGEONS.
Marian reaches the foot of the stairs and is stopped by a guard with a halberd.
MARIAN: Please. Marian sees Edward in a cell with parchment and quill. Please, Jailer, let me see my father.
JAILER: Can’t be done. I’ve told you.
EDWARD: Marian, I am well.
MARIAN: I will speak to the Sheriff.
EDWARD: Do not worry.
The Sheriff appears in the doorway above.
SHERIFF: Speak away, my dear.
MARIAN: Turns, startled. Sheriff. Climbs the stairs to him. This punishment hurts my father, not me.
SHERIFF: Oh, I don’t know. I think it hurts you both.
EXTERIOR CORRIDOR.
Marian follows the Sheriff down the corridor.
SHERIFF: It is efficient, make you think before you undermine my authority again. Which... stops... trust me, is in your best interests. Walks on.
MARIAN: Please. Hurries after him. Please, Sheriff. There must be something I can do...
They all stop at the courtyard steps.
Looks at Gisborne. Guy?
SHERIFF: It’s no good making those big eyes at him. He doesn’t want you anymore.
Marian tries to look elsewhere.
Tell you what, you read this announcement for me, and we’ll see if we can get Daddy some dinner. Steps down.
MARIAN: Calling after the Sheriff: You mean you haven’t fed him?
Gisborne steps to her. Marian looks at him and Gisborne follows the Sheriff down the steps.
Sheriff !
Follows them both.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. A BLOCK SOUTH OF THE CASTLE GATE.
The gang, with Dan and Luke, get ready to make their handouts.
ROBIN: Right, time to spread a bit of...
MUCH: Happiness.
ROBIN: Happiness. That’s right. Time to spread a bit of happiness.
They walk towards the marketplace. Much and Will pass out coins.
VILLAGER: Bless you.
WILL: to Dan: See? These people need us.
DAN: We need you, too. Your family.
Sarah comes running down the street in front of the castle gate carrying Jess.
SARAH: Help me! Somebody please help me!
Robin comes running. Sarah sees him.
Robin! Robin, help! It’s Jess.
Robin scoops Jess into his arms.
She’s got something. I think it’s the pestilence.
ROBIN: Let me see.
Will, Dan and Luke come over.
ROBIN: Will, get Djaq.
Dan looks at Jess as Will runs off.
DAN: There’s no swellings. How long has she been like this?
SARAH: Just since this morning.
At the castle gate, the Sheriff, Gisborne, Marian and two trumpeters assemble.
SHERIFF: Leans to the trumpeters. Toot-toot-toot, toot.
A fanfare plays. The townsfolk gather round and the gang turns their attention to Marian as she steps up on a box, parchment in hand.
MARIAN: Quietly: People of Nottingham.
SHERIFF: Louder.
MARIAN: Loudly: People of Nottingham!
SHERIFF: Good.
MARIAN: On behalf of the Sheriff, I make the following announcement.
Will and Djaq come up to Robin.
SARAH: Oh, please, please.
MARIAN: The pestilence has come to Nottingham.
The crowd murmurs.
SARAH: Oh, my god, Jess. That’s what it is!
DAN: No, it’s not.
MARIAN: Do not be afraid. It is confined to the houses in Pitt Street. There will be a quarantine placed around the street. No-one is to pass through without permission. No-one is to pass food or medicine...
DAN: What? There are young ones suffering. Steps away from the gang and out into the street. They can’t be cut off with nothing!
MARIAN: To do so risks spreading the infection and will be punished by death.
Marian realizes what she just said and frowns back at the Sheriff, who looks back unperturbed.
SARAH: What are we going to do? She’s gonna die!
DAN: No, she isn’t. That’s not what she’s got.
ROBIN: Sarah, take Jess home. Robin hands Jess back to Sarah. Djaq and I will come soon. Be careful.
MARIAN: We will not be cowed by this infection. Business will continue as normal. All workers...
MUCH: Over Marian’s line: What’s Marian’s game?
MARIAN: ... are to report to the castle for duty...
ROBIN: She’s just doing what she’s told.
MARIAN: ... at their usual hour.
Finished, Marian steps down and the Sheriff takes her place. Robin and Much quietly step to the side of the street amongst the crowd.
SHERIFF: Now, you may hear cries for help, pleas for mercy, medicine. “Help me, help me, help me!” A word of advice...
The Sheriff looks around to make sure the folks are watching, then puts his fingers in his ears, looks like he can’t hear anything and chuckles. Dan shakes his head. Will goes over to Robin and Will.
WILL: Over the Sheriff’s line: Robin, we’ve got to do something. He’s condemning the whole street to death.
SHERIFF: Go forth, in peace, to love and to serve your sheriff.
The Sheriff, finished, turns to step down. Dan yells out to him.
DAN: Sheriff, this is not right!
ROBIN: Steps forward. Dan! Dan!
Robin knows he can’t do anything or he’ll be seen. Much pulls him back off the street.
SHERIFF: Turns back to the crowd. Quietly: What?
Robin and Much rush to the marketplace’s canopies.
DAN: I’ve just had a look at a young lass and it’s not a pestilence.
SHERIFF: Quietly to a soldier: Get that man to shut up.
DAN: Walking towards the Sheriff. I’ve seen the pestilence before in Scarborough.
Will makes his way through the marketplace, following Dan.
These people must have food and water...
Robin and Much hop over tables in the marketplace, also following Dan.
... and medicine!
SHERIFF: I said shut up!
Will slowly follows Robin and Much, his eyes on his father.
DAN: I’ve shut up for you once before, Sheriff. It cost me my wife, my hand, and the respect of my son.
Will reaches Little John, who is watching from the marketplace, too.
So I’m not shutting up any more. Now why are you saying this is a pestilence—
Dan is stabbed by a soldier. Little John immediately grabs Will as he tries to run to his father.
WILL: DAD!!!
Marian turns around at the commotion. Much grabs Luke as he tries to run to Dan and Robin turns around and holds his hands up to Luke. The soldier lets Dan fall to the ground as Will watches, wide-eyed and horrified. The crowd murmur.
SHERIFF: Well done! Hysteria... panic... in times of crisis, not very helpful. It will not be tolerated!
Will is outraged and claws at Little John to get free. Robin and Much run over to help.
ROBIN: Will! Will, you can’t go up there!
WILL: I’m going to kill him!
GISBORNE: to the soldiers: You heard the Sheriff! Set up those barricades!
MUCH: There’s too many of them, Will. It’s suicide!
WILL: I don’t care!
DJAQ: Will!
Djaq puts her hand on Will’s chest and he immediately calms down and looks at her. Robin releases him, watching the soldiers with the barricades. Two other soldiers drag off Dan’s body as Luke watches alone. The townsfolk scatter.
ROBIN: We need to go to Pitt Street.
MUCH: Pitt Street? What?
Will runs over to Luke behind him.
ROBIN: There are people in there, our people, and they need us.
Will hugs Luke fiercely.
Turns to Djaq. Djaq?
DJAQ: Of course.
Djaq passes in front of Robin, then and circles behind him to wait next to Will and Luke.
LITTLE JOHN: Unsure: Robin, pestilence.
ALLAN: Listen, I’m not sure either, to be honest.
ROBIN: I think Dan was right. There is no pestilence. That’s why... that’s why the Sheriff killed him.
MUCH: You think?!
People start yelling for help as their street is being blocked off.
ROBIN: We haven’t go time for this! They’re setting the barricades up right now! Now come on!
Allan stops Robin.
ALLAN: Listen, I’ll tell you what. I’ll do the letter for what’s his name, Roger of Stoke.
Robin digs out the letter and hands it to Allan.
ROBIN: Good thinking. Here. Go.
Allan leaves.
The rest of you, I can’t ask you to risk your lives, but if you do come with me, do it for Dan. Now come on.
Djaq runs and Robin follows. Little John goes to Will.
LITTLE JOHN: Will, Pitt Street, the back way, now.
Will helps Luke to his feet and they and Much run after Robin.
GISBORNE: to the soldiers: Go on! Move it!
More barricades are put up as the gang run up another way to Pitt Street.
Put your backs into it!
Little John just makes it in past a barrier. Gisborne glares at him, wondering if he recognises Little John.
PITT STREET.
At the barricades, Joseph is yelling at a soldier.
JOSEPH: Let me through! I don’t live here! I was just walking this way! I’m from Leicester!
SOLDIER: Sheriff’s orders!
The soldier pushes Joseph back into Robin behind him.
JOSEPH: This has got nothing to do with me! Runs off.
SARAH: to the soldiers: Don’t do this! Don’t do this! My Jess needs help!
ROBIN: Sarah!
SARAH: Relieved: Robin! Then realizes he’s trapped, too. Oh, no, no, you can’t be here. You’ll never get out!
Djaq catches them up.
ROBIN: I said I’d come and find you.
DJAQ: Take us to your daughter.
SARAH: OK.
ROBIN: Let’s see what we can do. Come on.
Meanwhile, Luke is trying hard not to cry. Will sits behind him with his arms around him.
TRIP TO JERUSALEM INN. EXTERIOR.
Allan marks his sign on the post.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. PITT STREET. SARAH’S HOUSE. INTERIOR.
Djaq checks up on Jess. Sarah is naturally concerned and has eyes for no-one but Jess. Robin stands behind Djaq.
DJAQ: She needs water. Lots of water.
ROBIN: Are there any other people affected?
SARAH: Looks up. Half the houses in the street.
SARAH’S HOUSE. EXTERIOR.
Robin steps outside and sighs. Much and Little John are waiting, Much with a scarf over his nose and mouth. Robin steps between them and turns around to face them.
ROBIN: to Little John: Right. I want beds and clean linens all in... Robin looks at Much and pulls the scarf off. ... all in one place. Go. Turns to go back inside and remembers one more thing. Calls after them: And all the herbs and medicine from every house brought here to Djaq!
Robin sees Luke and goes to him. Luke is trembling and sobbing. Will, calmer but still distressed, sits behind him.
Hey, hey, hey. Puts a hand on Luke’s shoulder. Luke. Luke, your dad wouldn’t want this.
Luke throws off Robin’s hand.
LUKE: How do you know what he’d want? I should’ve killed the Sheriff.
ROBIN: You can’t just kill the Sheriff. Prince John would send an army to destroy Nottingham. It would create hell.
WILL: Stands. Robin, I want to take him home... to Scarborough... our auntie Annie.
Luke sobs uncontrollably.
If you need us here—
ROBIN: Interrupting: No, no. Puts his hand on the back of his head, thinking. No. Take him. And when you return we’ll honour your father. Puts his hand on Will’s shoulder.
WILL: Thank you.
Robin goes back inside. Will hugs Luke’s head.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. MARIAN’S CHAMBER.
Marian stands in her room, worrying about what is going on outside in the town. The door opens and closes. Marian turns around, expecting her regular servant. Another maid is there instead.
MARIAN: Where’s Sarah?
MAID: Don’t you know? She lives in Pitt Street.
MARIAN: Is she affected?
MAID: Little Jess.
MARIAN: Walks over to the maid. Right. We must get them medicine... and I need your clothes.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. PITT STREET.
In an upstairs window, Little John throws open the shutters and pulls out the support bars.
In the street below, Robin says goodbye to Will and Luke.
ROBIN: I’m sorry, Will.
WILL: Me too, Robin.
Robin and Will embrace.
During embrace: Really sorry.
Luke crawls out of the upstairs window onto a board bridge to the next roof.
Below, in the street, Much hands Little John a carrot, who eats it quickly.
Will and Luke jump to another roof and look down on a soldier, who didn’t notice them.
Much feeds Little John more food from a spoon.
Will and Luke jump down and across another roof, then extend a ladder across to yet another and see two soldiers on the battlements, watching, and two more below them at the barricades, and wait for the planned distraction.
Much nods to Little John as he looks sick and they head for the barricades. One of the battlement guards taps his companion and they both watch Little John, who vomits through the barricade onto a soldier beyond.
Will notices the distraction and quickly crawls across the ladder.
Luke follows. They leap onto another roof as more soldiers pass by, but they are unnoticed. Much leads Little John back to the house, looking subtly up at Will and Luke on a “safe” roof.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. MARIAN’S CHAMBER.
Marian is dressed in the maid’s clothes. The maid is in her underdress. Marian collects some jars and bottles and puts them in her shoulder bag.
MARIAN: We’ll need to take food as well. Reaches up to take her hairpins out.
MAID: Helping to pack. No need, miss. They’re all fed. The Nightwatchman visited last night. Pitt Street.
Marian frowns, confused, as the maid continues to pack the bag.
INTERIOR CORRIDOR OUTSIDE MARIAN’S CHAMBER.
Gisborne knocks on the door.
MARIAN’S CHAMBER.
MARIAN: Panicked at being caught and pulling out another hairpin: Don’t come in!
GISBORNE: From outside the door: Marian?
Marian rushes over to the door.
MARIAN: You can’t come in. Locks the door.
CORRIDOR.
Gisborne tries the handle.
GISBORNE: I cannot talk to you through the door.
MARIAN’S CHAMBER.
MARIAN: Well, then you cannot talk to me at all.
Marian nods at the open bag, and the maid closes it.
GISBORNE: From outside the door: I just wanted to apologise... for what happened today, the way the Sheriff treated you.
MARIAN: Am I to perform like a monkey whilst my father starves in the dungeon?
GISBORNE: No. I will see to it that your father is properly fed.
MARIAN: Scoffs. Really? And what do you want in return?
GISBORNE: Nothing. You have my word.
MARIAN: Then thank you.
CORRIDOR.
GISBORNE: Marian, please let me in. Tries the handle once more, then leaves.
MARIAN’S CHAMBER.
The maid puts her cloak around Marian’s shoulders.
MARIAN: The Nightwatchman went to Pitt Street?
MAID: Yes.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. PITT STREET.
Robin knocks on the door of another house.
ROBIN: Hello? It’s Robin Hood. Do you have any medicine or herbs you could give me?
The door opens and a man sticks his head out.
MAN: Robin, please, go away. We have the pestilence here. Save yourself.
The man quickly closes the door. Robin walks away, disappointed, and sees Joseph staring at him.
JOSEPH: Annoyed: What are you doing?
ROBIN: Surprised at his attitude. I’m helping the sick.
JOSEPH: Leave them alone.
Robin frowns at him.
Trying to be normal: I mean, you could die.
ROBIN: Well, that’s a risk I take every day. Walks past Joseph.
JOSEPH: Turns around. Know what? You’re right. Forgive me. Er, let me help.
ROBIN: What’s your name?
JOSEPH: Joseph. I’m here by mistake.
ROBIN: Yeah, you’re from Leicester, I heard.
JOSEPH: Did you see the way those men treated me? Shakes his head. Godless.
ROBIN: Well, welcome to Nottingham.
Behind Joseph, Little John and Much carry out a bed.
LITTLE JOHN: Er, Robin? Points to the other end of the bed.
ROBIN: These men are with me. Can you help them? Follows Much and Little John.
Robin helps Sarah carry Jess to the makeshift hospital around the side of her house. Djaq is with the person on the next bed.
DJAQ: to Robin. These people are burning up.
JOSEPH: You know, perhaps it would be a kindness just not to interfere, not prolong the pain.
Robin, sitting at Jess’ bedside, looks up sideways and glares at him.
Much comes running in by Djaq, holding a large box aloft.
MUCH: This is a medicine chest!
Djaq turns around to face Much and he opens it to show her.
Every medicine known to man and some unknown.
Joseph walks away as Djaq pulls out two bottles, squeals a bit and kisses Much on the cheek.
Oh, don’t do that.
DJAQ: Why not?
MUCH: I’m a man, you’re a woman. I fall in love very easily.
DJAQ: Sniffs the bottles. Don’t worry. I don’t. Quickly steps over to help a sick man just brought in.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. ON TOP OF THE TOWN WALL.
Will has strung a rope through a ring on the gibbet. He lets the rope drop, then reaches for it, but can’t. Luke hops up on the wall on the other side.
WILL: Let me go down first, make sure it’s safe.
Will flips out his hatchet to hook the rope and pull it towards him, then pulls on the rope to be sure it will hold.
I know what to look for better than you do.
Luke grabs the rope from Will.
LUKE: Why do you always treat me like I’m a baby?
Luke climbs down the rope to the ground below as Will puts his hatchet away.
WILL: When Luke touches the ground, quietly: I loved you, Luke.
LUKE: See? Your turn! Will pulls the rope back up. Will?
WILL: Run away, Luke! Run back to Scarborough! Quietly: This place is about to turn into hell.
LUKE: Will! Cups his hands around his mouth. Will! Will!
Will turns away.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. PITT STREET.
Djaq, sitting on one side of Jess, grinds something up for her while Sarah sits on the other side. Robin stands at the foot. Much comes over with a bowl of water, squeezes out a rag and hands it to Djaq.
SARAH: She’ll not die, will she?
DJAQ: Not if I can help it. Puts the rag on Jess’ forehead.
Meanwhile, Joseph is talking to an old lady sitting by her sick husband in the next bed.
JOSEPH: And you’re from the fourth house on the street? And your husband ate a large pie last night, and nothing since?
WOMAN: That’s right.
JOSEPH: Good. Stands.
WOMAN: Puzzled: Good?
Joseph walks over to Jess’ bed as Robin walks away.
JOSEPH: Looking at Jess. She’s hotter. Look at the cheeks and the lips.
DJAQ: Are you trained in medicine?
JOSEPH: Me? No, no. Just, er... just hoping this poor child recovers.
The man he was just sitting with starts gasping for breath.
WOMAN: Don’t go!
She starts crying as Djaq, Robin and Much hurry over and Joseph watches. The man breathes his last. Djaq looks up at Robin to confirm the death. Joseph leaves.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. OUTER WALL.
Will has thrown his hatchet, tied to a rope like a grappling hook, over the castle wall and he is scaling the wall, his dark cloak billowing in the breeze. As he climbs over the battlements, a soldier confronts him.
SOLDIER: Stand! Draws his bow. Or you’re dead.
Will jumps down to the floor, starts to grab his hatchet and then looks at the soldier, unconcerned and determined. He takes a step forward and the soldier shoots at Will’s head. Will tilts his head to avoid it, stepping steadily forward, then punches out the guard before he has a chance to reload and picks up the fallen bow and arrow.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. PITT STREET. SARAH’S HOUSE. INTERIOR.
Joseph is listing the death, in code, in his journal. Robin enters and Joseph quickly hides his quill, closes the book and pushes the Nightwatchman’s mask back into his open bag.
Robin doesn’t notice—he’s pacing, angry, and sighs.
JOSEPH: A shame.
ROBIN: A shame?
Robin picks up an earthenware pot and throws it at the wall where it smashes.
It’s an outrage. That’s another life wasted.
Joseph pulls the flap of his bag closed.
JOSEPH: You suspect foul play?
ROBIN: Trying to keep his patience. Joseph, Joseph. This is Nottingham. There is no other kind of play.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. INTERIOR CORRIDOR.
Marian is sneaking towards the main doors. Will is waiting to ambush someone, not knowing who it is approaching. He turns to the other side of pillar and draws his bow. Marian gasps as she passes it, backing against the wall. She recognises Will.
MARIAN: Relieved. Will.
Will lowers his bow
Will, you scared me. What are you doing here? Do you have a message from Robin?
Will just stares at her, in a trance with determination.
Will?
Will runs off.
Whispers: Will!
Marian frowns and goes on her way.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. PITT STREET.
Robin paces, thinking.
ROBIN: So... you’re all from different families, and you haven’t eaten together.
SARAH: We’ve all eaten the pies, though. Our Jess ate ours.
Joseph arrives.
JOSEPH: How much did she have?
ROBIN: What pies?
SARAH: The Nightwatchman’s.
Robin goes over to her.
He brought them all last night. Every house in the street.
JOSEPH: Soup. I’ll make everybody some soup. Goes inside.
Robin leans on a post, thinking.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. INTERIOR CELLAR CORRIDOR.
Will finds the Sheriff and Gisborne leaving a storeroom and walking down the corridor.
GISBORNE: They’re dropping like flies, my lord.
SHERIFF: The poison’s lethal. Can’t let it fall into the wrong hands, huh?.
They walk towards Will. Will tries to get to them but a locked gate bars his way.
I’m thinking of getting a food taster, Gisborne...
Will aims the arrow through the gate.
All this tasteless poison about.
The Sheriff stops. Gisborne takes another step and stops, blocking Will’s shot.
What do you think?
GISBORNE: Good idea.
SHERIFF: Hm. Or maybe I’ll eat half an hour after you do.
They continue on and Will can’t get a shot off. Will grabs the gate, frustrated, as a door closes behind them.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. MAIN GATE.
The castle workers are going home for the day, Marian amongst them, her face hidden in the hood of the maid’s cloak. Once outside, the workers wave and separate to their homes. Marian heads for Pitt Street.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. INTERIOR CELLAR CORRIDOR.
Will sets a candle on a bench by the door the Sheriff just came out. He drops the bow with a clatter and flips out his hatchet. He lifts the blade off, revealing a chisel, checks the tip, sets it in the door, and starts hammering on it.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. TRIP TO JERUSALEM INN. EXTERIOR.
Gisborne rubs Allan’s mark off the post and enters the inn.
INTERIOR. THE BACK ROOM.
GISBORNE: What have you got for me? What’s the matter? A conscience?
ALLAN: Looks at the door, steps to Gisborne. How much for this?
Holds up Robin’s letter, sealed with red wax.
GISBORNE: Depends what “this” is.
ALLAN: It’s a letter to King Richard from Robin, telling him all about you and the Sheriff and the Black Knights. Game would be up, eh, Gisborne?
GISBORNE: Give me that.
ALLAN: I can’t. I told Robin I’d give it to Roger of Stoke He’s coming to take it to the King.
GISBORNE: So what’s your proposal?
ALLAN: I’ll give it to him, then I’m clean. You can arrest him after I’ve gone, somewhere out of town. I don’t know anything about it.
GISBORNE: Good. You’re learning... Gisborne hands a money bag to Allan. ... Allan.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. NEAR PITT STREET.
Marian crawls up on a roof and sees a soldier below. She jumps to another roof and is seen by the soldier.
SOLDIER: Hey! Stop! I’ve seen you!
Marian positions herself on the roof. The soldier climbs up and Marian kicks him off again.
MARIAN: No you haven’t.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. PITT STREET.
Robin and Joseph put the dead man’s body on a cart as Marian climbs over the last roof.
JOSEPH: to Robin: You should come and eat, keep your strength up.
Returns to the house.
ROBIN: All right. Thanks, Joseph.
Robin takes a moment to rest as Marian calls to him from the roof.
MARIAN: Whispers: Robin. Robin!
ROBIN: Looks up at Marian, a bit out of breath from carrying the weight. Marian, what are you doing here?
MARIAN: Someone’s impersonating me.
ROBIN: I know. I think he’s given out poisoned pies.
MARIAN: Climbing down to the edge: What? In my name?
ROBIN: It’s the Sheriff’s doing. But... but why?
MARIAN: I’ve no idea, unless he wants to damage the Nightwatchman’s reputation.
ROBIN: But then he’d blame the Nightwatchman... Marian takes her shoulder bag off over her head. ... and he hasn’t.
Robin catches Marian’s bag as she drops to a table. Robin takes her into his arms. They smile at each other lovingly for a long moment.
MARIAN: I need to go and see if Jess is all right.
Robin turns his head aside lets her down, then watches her go.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. INTERIOR CELLAR CORRIDOR.
Will breaks through the door, reaches in and lifts the latch from the inside. The door opens and Will steps through with the candle. He looks around and sees a bottle with a clear liquid on a far shelf. He steps around to it, holds the bottle up to the light, then blows out the candle.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. PITT STREET. SARAH’S HOUSE. INTERIOR.
Joseph opens his bag on the table and pulls out a bottle of clear liquid, revealing his Nightwatchman’s mask still in the bag. He steps over to his soup pot as Much enters with a round of bread. Joseph hides the bottle in his hand at his hip. Much steps over to Joseph.
MUCH: Mm. Smells good. Are you a cook?
Much goes over to the table, closes Joseph’s bag without looking inside it, and clears the table.
JOSEPH: No. I’m a man of science.
MUCH: Science? What, er, sort of science?
JOSEPH: Pours a generous amount of the liquid into the soup. The science of elimination.
MUCH: What’s that?
JOSEPH: Finding ways to get rid of dirt.
Much sets out bowls and plates as Joseph walks over to him.
Have you noticed there’s dirt everywhere? We have to get rid of it. And there are people who will make the necessary difficult decisions, who don’t need to be popular.
MUCH: Setting out spoons: Well, you can talk to the Sheriff. He doesn’t need to be popular.
Joseph grabs Much’s arm.
JOSEPH: With the right tool, we can clean this country, create a new England.
MUCH: Confused by Joseph’s meaning. Haltingly: Well, you should definitely talk to the Sheriff.
Joseph pats Much’s arm and walks back to the pot. Much goes outside.
to Little John: Food!
SARAH’S HOUSE. EXTERIOR.
Robin, Djaq and Marian are attending to the sick. Little John pokes his head around the corner and announces:
LITTLE JOHN: Food.
MARIAN: to Djaq: I’ll take over.
Djaq relinquishes her spot to Marian.
to Robin: You organised this?
ROBIN: We had hospitals in the Holy Land. I thought that’d be the last time I’d see them.
MARIAN: How did you know there wasn’t some kind of infectious disease?
ROBIN: Shakes his head. I didn’t.
MARIAN: That’s brave.
ROBIN: Scoffs quietly. How did you know?
MARIAN: I didn’t.
Joseph arrives.
JOSEPH: Robin, you eating?
Marian recognises Joseph and quietly slinks into the dark corner behind her.
ROBIN: In a moment. The others can start.
JOSEPH: Very impatiently: No, I need you.
Robin looks back at him, frowning.
Nicely: I mean, you should eat.
ROBIN: I’ll be there in a moment.
Joseph leaves. Robin scoffs as Marian reappears from her corner.
MARIAN: Whispers: Robin. Robin, I know that man. I’ve seen him before in the castle.
Robin is very attentive. He’s advising the Sheriff.
Robin’s mind is quickly putting all the pieces together.
SARAH’S HOUSE. INTERIOR.
Joseph is handing out plates of soup and bread to Djaq, Little John and Much.
JOSEPH: “And the Lord said, ‘Take, eat, do this in memory of me.’ ”
MUCH: You make it sound like the Last Supper.
Just as they are about to take a bite, three arrows in rapid succession knock the food from their lips.
LITTLE JOHN: Angrily: Robin!
Robin has a loaded bow pointed at Joseph.
ROBIN: This is the last supper... for you, Joseph.
MARIAN: Holds up a Nightwatchman-like mask. You poison people and then you keep a record of their suffering!
MUCH: Wipes his mouth with the back of his hand. What? That is revolting!
JOSEPH: Shakes his head. My poison has no taste, no colour, no odour. It’s a beautiful thing.
Djaq sniffs her bowl.
ROBIN: What’s the cure for the poison?
Joseph turns his head and looks silently at Robin. Robin fires an arrow which grazes Joseph’s cheek.
Impatiently, angrily: There are people out there dying.
Joseph fingers his wound.
Children!
JOSEPH: Smiling: It’s made from a extract of the Amanita mushroom. Joseph pauses, looking at their puzzled faces. The Angel of Death! Djaq inhales sharply. The Devil’s Cap!
Little John’s eyes widen. Marian looks at Robin, horrified.
There is no cure!
Joseph delights in the looks on everyone’s faces, then chuckles, kicks over a chair and dives his head firrst out the window into the street before anybody can catch him.
PITT STREET. EXTERIOR.
LITTLE JOHN: Off-stage: Stop him!
Joseph runs towards the barricades. Little John and Much try to exit at the same time. Little John wins and Much follows him out.
JOSEPH: to the soldiers: Open the gate!
LITTLE JOHN: Stop that man! Stop him! Stop that man!
Robin aims an arrow, but can’t get a shot off at the fast moving target before Joseph disappears around the corner.
JOSEPH: to the soldiers: It’s me! Let me through! It’s me!
LITTLE JOHN: Stop him!
Joseph runs through the barricade and it is immediately closed behind him as Little John crashes into it. Joseph nods to the soldier as Much and Djaq arrive.
They knew him!
MUCH: He tricked us!
DJAQ: Clever.
MUCH: Clever? He nearly poisoned us. What about these people?
LITTLE JOHN: Thinks for a moment: Belladonna.
MUCH: Bella what?
LITTLE JOHN: Belladonna. For mushroom poisoning.
DJAQ: Belladonna is Deadly Nightshade. It is a poison.
LITTLE JOHN: Shakes his head: It works. Woodman’s remedy.
DJAQ: Amazed: Poison to fight poison.
Djaq smiles and runs between Robin and Marian, back to the medicine box Much found earlier.
SARAH’S HOUSE. EXTERIOR.
Marian is standing over Sarah’s shoulder at Jess’ bedside.
SARAH: Djaq? Djaq? It’s Jess. I thinks she’s going.
Djaq hurries over with a jar from the medicine box. Sarah sees the it.
What’s that?
DJAQ: It’s a hunch. But it could kill her.
SARAH: Whose hunch?
LITTLE JOHN: Mine.
Sarah stares at him. Little John steps forward and takes the jar from Djaq and sits at Jess’ side.
Here. Trust me. Let me do this.
Sarah cries for a moment, then recovers.
SARAH: She’s going anyway. Just try it. Just try it.
Little John smears a bit of belladonna on Jess’ tongue. Jess turns her head. Marian is standing behind Sarah, watching.
Jess! No! Sobs. No!
Robin glances at Marian. Marian puts her hand on Sarah’s shoulder. Jess tosses a bit, then opens her eyes.
Happily: Jess! Oh, it’s working! It’s working!
DJAQ: I think it is. It is working.
Sarah hugs Jess as Marian smiles.
MUCH: Amazing! With the back of his hand, slaps Little John in the chest. How did you know that?
LITTLE JOHN: Slightly embarrassed and offended: I know some things.
ROBIN: We have to stop Joseph before he poisons anybody else. Now, he’ll have gone into the castle. We have to find a way to get in after him.
MARIAN: Well, how did Will get in?
MUCH: Confused: Will?
MARIAN: He’s in the castle.
Robin knows what Will is planning.
Didn’t you know?
ROBIN: Oh, no.
MARIAN: What’s going on?
DJAQ: He is going to kill the Sheriff.
MARIAN: Well, doesn’t he know that Prince John would destroy Nottingham?
MUCH: Oh, he knows, but—
ROBIN: Interrupting: The man the Sheriff killed... was Will’s father.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. INTERIOR CORRIDOR.
A young man is carrying a tray with a pitcher and two goblets towards the Sheriff ’s quarters. Will, standing between two pillars, grabs the pitcher off the tray. The young man stops and Will punches him out.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. THE WELL.
Allan walks up to a man standing next to a horse at the well. A woman is doing her washing nearby.
ALLAN: Roger?
ROGER: Where’s Robin?
Allan motions to the woman to turn away.
ALLAN: He couldn’t make it. He gave me this for you.
Allan hands the letter to Roger and pats the horse.
ROGER: Oh! God save the King. Leads his horse away.
ALLAN: Yeah. And the rest of us.
Allan leaves to his left and walks right into Gisborne on his horse. Allan quickly turns around to let him pass. Gisborne gives Allan a sinister grin as he passes. Allan waits until he is gone, then continues on his way.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. SHERIFF’S QUARTERS.
The Sheriff is about to eat his supper as door opens and Joseph comes in.
SHERIFF: Ah. Success with the pitiful of Pitt Street?
JOSEPH: Oh, yes. Even those who hardly touched the food are in agony. And those who ate the full dose have begun to die, as I predicted.
SHERIFF: Picks up a chicken leg, thinks twice, and puts it back down. Sits down. Very good. Well done. Thank you. Goodbye.
JOSEPH: Pardon?
SHERIFF: Oh, you can go now, back to wherever it was that you came from. You’ll be paid, don’t worry.
JOSEPH: But the application of my invention. We were going to do that together. To rid the country of the weak and the dirty and the parasites.
SHERIFF: Stands and steps around the table to Joseph. My dear boy, those are the ones who do exactly what I tell them to. We need those. No, no, no. Your poison should be used on the King’s army when he lands on the south coast.
JOSEPH: But that’s not what we agreed.
SHERIFF: Yes... yes I know. Wiping his hands on Joseph’s cloak: And life is usually so much fairer. Ha. Walks to his birds, making kissing noises. Come to daddy.
Joseph is silently seething.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. PITT STREET.
Marian and the gang arrive at the barricade with cloths over their faces. Robin and Little John carry a stretcher. Djaq, dressed as a monk, carries a earthenware jar of water.
SOLDIER: Nobody passes.
MARIAN: In a peasant accent: Master Joseph asked us to bring the body to t’ castle.
SOLDIER: What for?
MARIAN: He didn’t say.
LITTLE JOHN: Calling from the back: Or do you want to take it?
The soldier opens the gate and the gang goes through, with Much looking dead on a stretcher, a large wooden cross on his chest.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. SHERIFF’S QUARTERS.
A guard knocks on the Sheriff’s door. The Sheriff has his feet up on the table, one foot bare. Joseph leans on the table.
SHERIFF: Enter!
The guard opens the door and Will enters with the tray.
JOSEPH: I will not let you use my poison!
The Sheriff tosses his boot over his shoulder to the floor.
SHERIFF: Well, I’m surprised to hear you say that, hm? A clue... spells out “no” with his finger.
Will sets the tray down on the table and pours red wine into the goblets as the Sheriff picks up a book.
Luckily I managed to commandeer your meticulous records. Drops the book on the table.
JOSEPH: You used me.
SHERIFF: Shrugs. Yes. I used you. Takes off his other boot. You’ll just have to bite the bullet. I like you.
The Sheriff motions to Will for his drink.
If I didn’t, well...
Will offers him the tray and he takes a goblet.
I could make you drink from your own cup, so to speak.
Will offers the tray to Joseph, who takes the remaining goblet.
So, chin-chin, hm?
Will walks towards the door with the tray.
Erm, you, you, boy... don’t I know you?
WILL: Turns his head slightly, not looking at the Sheriff. You knew my dad, Dan. He’s dead now.
SHERIFF: Oh, really? Well, here’s to your dearly departed dead dad, Dan.
The Sheriff chuckles. Will looks back at the Sheriff, who drinks.
Mmm.
Will turns to the door and nervously steps out.
Come along, Joey, boy. Drink up!
Joseph drinks.
And then get lost, hm? Otherwise I might change my mind. Drinks. To dead Dan.
Will shudders and wheezes as the doors close behind him. He breathes heavily and closes his eyes, then looks back at the guards and quickly leaves.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. THE MAIN GATE.
The gang carries Much to the castle.
GUARD: Raise the gate! Body for Mr Joseph!
The gang approaches the gate. Allan, waiting nearby, sees them and puts up his hood. He goes over to Little John and takes one pole of the stretcher from him. Djaq sprinkles water along their path and makes the sign of the cross to the guard as they go through the gate.
INTERIOR CORRIDOR. THE DOOR TO MARIAN’S CHAMBER.
Marian leads them through the castle, first checking to be sure the way is clear.
ALLAN: What’s happening?
Robin and Little John put the down the stretcher as Djaq removes her mask.
DJAQ: Will’s in here.
MUCH: Getting off the stretcher, just fine: And he wants to kill the Sheriff.
Robin looks back down the corridor as Little John gets his staff from the stretcher, then Robin turns to face the gang.
ROBIN: And the Sheriff has hired a poisoner. Puts a hand on Allan’s shoulder. Did you see Roger of Stoke?
ALLAN: Yeah. Yeah, I gave him your letter.
ROBIN: Good. Good work.
Robin takes off his cape and puts on his knife belt. Allan, Djaq and Much put on their sword belts.
John, Allan, you go down that way.
MUCH: What do we do if he doesn’t come quietly?
ROBIN: Then you make him.
MUCH: But what if he won’t?
ROBIN: Solemnly, pausing, adjusting his belt: Whatever it takes, Much.
Djaq looks back at Robin.
MUCH: Whatever it takes?
ROBIN: Whatever it takes.
MUCH: We kill one of our own?
Allan and Djaq finish buckling as Marian looks on quietly, eyes wide. Allan looks concerned, too.
ROBIN: Nods solemnly. Well, let’s hope we have a choice.
Allan stares. Much draws his sword and all split up, Marian going into her room and closing the door.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. SHERIFF’S QUARTERS.
Off-stage, Robin punches out the two guards and enters. The falcon mews. Robin sees the Sheriff slumped over the table.
SHERIFF: Help.
Joseph is writhing on the floor. Robin steps forward and looks around.
ROBIN: to himself: Will.
SHERIFF: Robin, help... ah... poison. Drops his goblet on the table.
Robin leans over the Sheriff, showing no sympathy, but rather having fun with the situation.
ROBIN: Well, according to your friend, here, there is no cure, so... you’re gonna... die.
SHERIFF: No, I cannot die. I’m too young. Groans. And I haven’t finished yet. Falls to the floor clutching his stomach.
ROBIN: Squats by him. Dan Scarlett hadn’t finished either when you killed him this morning.
SHERIFF: Him? Dead Dan? Oh... the father. I’m going to die because of a complete nonentity? Ow.
JOSEPH: With malice: And life is usually so much fairer.
The Sheriff tries to crawl to Joseph, but can’t.
ROBIN: Why, Sheriff ?
SHERIFF: Operation Shah Mat.
ROBIN: Understanding. Oh.
SHERIFF: The King’s army... You should approve. We win without any bloodshed.
ROBIN: Well, you’re not winning now... are you?
SHERIFF: Shakes his head and moans. No, no, no.
ROBIN: Now... if, by the slightest chance... I happened to have a cure...
Joseph looks up. Robin picks up a small bit from the floor and twirls it between the thumb and finger of both hands.
... would you give up Shah Mat?
The Sheriff nods.
JOSEPH: No! Points at Robin. There’s no cure!
SHERIFF: Shut up! Ah... yes, yes. Yes, Robin. Grabs Robin’s wrist.
ROBIN: Imitating: Yes, yes. Through his teeth: Well, don’t die before I get back.
SHERIFF: Shakes head. No.
ROBIN: No.
Robin gets up and leaves.
INTERIOR CORRIDOR.
Will is walking, dazed, through the castle. Djaq sees him.
DJAQ: Will! Runs to him. Tell me you haven’t done anything stupid.
WILL: Stupid?
DJAQ: To the Sheriff.
WILL: I haven’t touched him.
DJAQ: It’s not pestilence. It’s poison, and we have a cure. It’s Little John’s idea.
Djaq turns to run back to Robin. Will slowly walks after her.
WILL: Flatly: That’s—that’s good.
DJAQ: Stops and turns around. You’re not happy? The sick are getting better.
Will opens a door and pushes Djaq inside.
What are you doing?
Will slams the door shut shoves a stick through the ring.
WILL: My dad isn’t getting better!
DJAQ: From inside the door: Don’t do this!
Will runs away.
INTERIOR CORRIDOR. ANOTHER PART OF THE CASTLE.
Much with his sword is walking along slowly. Robin runs up to him.
ROBIN: At the sword raised: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! Where’s Djaq?
MUCH: We split up.
Allan and Little John catch them up as Robin reacts, frustrated, clenching his fists by his face and spinning around.
ROBIN: Will’s poisoned the Sheriff.
MUCH & LITTLE JOHN: What?
ROBIN: And Djaq’s got the remedy.
Will walks by behind Much and Little John.
Will!
Will stops and turns like he’s in a trance.
I know what you’ve done.
WILL: I’ve done the right thing, that’s what I’ve done. Holds up the bottle. Justice in a bottle.
ROBIN: Djaq has the remedy.
WILL: Yeah, I know. She told me.
MUCH: Where is she, Will? What have you done with her?
WILL: I’ve stood up to the Sheriff. That’s what we all should have done a long time ago.
ROBIN: Even if all of Nottingham dies?
WILL: That’s not my fault.
Robin charges Will, putting his left hand on his neck and grabbing the bottle with his other. He holds the bottle to his lips and drinks as Will pulls at Robin’s hand at his neck.
MUCH: Whoa, Master, no!
LITTLE JOHN: Eyes wide: Robin!
WILL: Robin!
LITTLE JOHN: Robin!
Robin lowers the bottle and wipes his mouth with the back of his hand holding the bottle. His left hand is still at Will’s throat. Will breathes heavily.
ROBIN: You want to watch people die? Then you can start with me.
WILL: Robin, I can’t let the Sheriff live.
ROBIN: Yes, you can!
WILL: My dad, he did it for me. He stood up to the Sheriff to prove himself to me!!
ROBIN: Then prove yourself to him. Show them we are stronger men than the Sheriff.
Will stares at Robin with wide eyes, then Robin grunts and doubles over.
WILL: Robin!
Much grabs Robin and helps him sit on the floor.
MUCH: Will! Will, come on!
WILL: Robin, why did you have to do this?
ROBIN: To prove my point. Will Scarlett still believes in the right thing.
MUCH: Will, please!
Robin groans.
LITTLE JOHN: Will, do this.
WILL: I’ll take you to her.
Will runs off the way he came. Much and Little John help Robin to his feet.
ROBIN: Go. Go to the Sheriff’s quarters. Go. I’ll see you there.
Robin stands bent over until the others are out of sight, then stands up, straightens his hood, picks up the bottle and tosses it up and catches it, still corked. He takes a deep breath.
EXTERIOR CORRIDOR.
Much, Allan and Little John follow Will to get Djaq. Allan stops by an opening overlooking the courtyard and sees Gisborne bringing in Roger of Stoke on his horse. Gisborne pulls Roger off the horse and lets him fall to the ground, obviously dead. Allan sees this, closes his eyes and shakes his head. Much sees Allan stopped and looks out at the courtyard.
MUCH: Who’s that? Slaps Allan’s shoulder. What are you doing? Come on!
Gisborne takes the note from Roger’s belt.
SHERIFF’S QUARTERS.
Robin bursts into the room and sees the Sheriff and Joseph crawling on the floor in agony.
ROBIN: Sarcastically: Oooo. Nothing like the taste of your own medicine, is there?
Robin picks up the stand with the three skulls and uses it to smash the window open.
Chuckles. And you... Robin grabs the Sheriff ... have got an announcement to make.
Robin carries the Sheriff to the window. The Sheriff moans.
SHERIFF: Out the window to the people below: People of Nottingham! There is no pestilence! Groans. It was poison! An experiment for which I’m... truly, truly sorry.
Robin pushes him.
ROBIN: Shah Mat!
SHERIFF: I can’t. Slumps to the floor. I’m so weak.
Little John bursts in with the gang behind him.
LITTLE JOHN: Robin!
MUCH: Djaq, the remedy. Quick!
Djaq tosses the jar to Robin.
ROBIN: Points at Will. Will, this is your call. Will steps forward.
Prove to me Will Scarlett believes in doing the right thing.
WILL: Looks at Robin. You didn’t drink the poison, did you?
ROBIN: No... but I think my point still stands, so... Indicates the Sheriff.
WILL: Yeah. Yeah, it does.
Will leans over the Sheriff’s head and puts a bit of belladonna on the Sheriff’s tongue.
This is to the memory of my good father, Dan Scarlett, and the people of Nottingham.
They all wait a moment, but the Sheriff doesn’t move. Robin looks up. Little John looks troubled. Will glances back at Much.
MUCH: He can’t be dead.
Robin looks worried.
ALLAN: This is just getting weird now. I want him to live; I don’t want him to live.
Robin shakes the Sheriff’s shoulder.
ROBIN: Come on!
SHERIFF: Lifts his head. Just joshing.
ROBIN: Finish the speech.
SHERIFF: Oh, I don’t think so, now that I’ve had the remedy, hm? Guards! Guards!
ROBIN: Go! Go! Go!
The gang runs out. Robin tries to follow, but the Sheriff grabs his leg.
SHERIFF: Robin Hood! Kill him!
Robin pulls his leg free and makes for the door, but Joseph comes out from behind the open door with his sword raised.
JOSEPH: “Then he looked and saw the angel of death standing between heaven and earth.” Points his sword at Robin.
ROBIN: Backing towards the window: Joseph, there’s a cure. I can give you the antidote.
JOSEPH: I was going to be remembered for a thousand years. The creator of the perfect poison. There cannot be an antidote.
ROBIN: There is an antidote and any woodsman would know it.
JOSEPH: No!
Joseph charges at Robin.
ROBIN: No, Joseph!
Joseph barrels into Robin and they both go through the window. The Sheriff strains to pull himself up to the window and looks out to see Robin hanging by his right hand from the top of the long banner which reaches to the top of the main doors below. Joseph has a hold of Robin’s boot. Robin reaches down to him with his left hand.
SHERIFF: Quietly: Hood.
ROBIN: to Joseph: Give me—give me your hand.
The boot slips off Robin’s foot and Joseph falls to his death to the steps below.
With his left hand, Robin stabs his knife into the banner, then grabs it with both hands and slides down, the knife cutting the cloth, sparking against the stone wall and slowing his fall. The gang wait below at the portcullis, watching.
Gisborne, who has just joined the Sheriff, yells down.
GISBORNE: Get him!
Robin reaches the thick rope at the bottom of the banner and stops, then the banner tears away from the rope and Robin drops gently to the ground. He sits on the steps and puts on his fallen boot as Gisborne helps the Sheriff from the window. Robin runs to join his gang and looks back.
Stop him!
Robin laughs and the gang runs out through the gate and the street of cheering townsfolk, Sarah and Jess among them.
SHERWOOD FOREST. NEAR CAMP.
Will is up on a tall boulder, working on something. Luke is leading the gang to him.
ROBIN: It’s good to have you back, Lukey.
DJAQ: Are you both ready for this?
ALLAN: Look! What’s he doing up there?
MUCH: I thought you said Will was going to build something to remind you of your father.
LUKE: He is. Wait for the light.
MUCH: Light? Looks around. It is light.
Will runs down to Luke, excited.
LUKE: Any second... now.
The setting sun shines through Will’s contraption and lights up the face of another boulder. The gang follows the light and Dan’s face appears on the surface of the boulder. All are amazed. Robin smiles.
LITTLE JOHN: Dan.
MUCH: That is...
DJAQ: Awed: Beautiful.
Will puts his arm around Luke.
ROBIN: He was a good man.
WILL: Yeah. Yeah, he was.
END OF EPISODE FOUR.
