SHERWOOD FOREST. NEAR THE OUTLAWS' CAMP.
Robin is lying in the road with an arrow through his left eye. Leaves drift over him, blown by the wind. An outrider steps up cautiously to him and nudges Robin’s leg with his foot. Robin doesn’t react.
OUTRIDER : Gone to meet his maker.
A long-haired blonde woman steps down from her horse. Behind her are several more men and a cart.
DAVINA : Get rid of him.
The man kneels down beside Robin.
OUTRIDER : Just seeing if he’s got a purse.
He starts to pat Robin’s body and Robin opens his eye. The guard is shocked.
ROBIN : I’ll show you my purse if you show me yours.
Robin kicks the man in the groin, removes the arrow and the eye patch, then rolls over to his feet. The man scrambles back to his party as the woman and the other men stride forward. Robin stands up as the rest of the gang appear behind him: Will and Allan with drawn bows, Much and Djaq with swords, Little John with his staff.
This is an ambush!
DAVINA : Unsurprised, sarcastically. You don’t say.
MUCH : This is how it goes!
WILL : There’s poor people going hungry.
ALLAN : You tell us what you’ve got...
DJAQ : Be honest with us...
MUCH : And we take one tenth.
WILL : So the poor can eat.
LITTLE JOHN : Lie...
MUCH : Or resist...
ROBIN : And we take it all. Davina smiles in contempt. So what’s it gonna be?!
Allan takes the ring from Davina’s gloved hand and smiles at her. Davina just stares. Little John, Djaq and Will stand in their original places, weapons drawn. Robin steps in front of Davina as Much takes a knife from a man. Robin sweeps his gaze up and down Davina, then hears a rattling sound. He steps behind her to a large red box with a few holes in the top. Davina turns around, watching him.
ROBIN : Playfully Well, what have we got here?
DAVINA : My babies.
Davina snaps her whip at Robin’s hands just as he’s lifting the lid.
to her men: Get them!
Two men charge Little John as he jumps down the hill to face them. Another goes after Allan. Little John is beaten to his knees. Much dodges his man and then swings a full money bag at the man’s passing shoulder. Allan’s man waves his hands in front of his face menacingly, but Allan also swings a money bag at him. Much then throws his bag at his man, spilling the coins. Little John’s two men draw out their daggers and throw them, but Little John knocks them away with the end of his staff. Davina advances on Robin.
ROBIN : I don’t want to hurt you.
DAVINA : How chivalrous.
Davina kicks Robin in the chest. Allan is dodging kicks. Little John uses his staff to vault his feet into the chests of his two men. Djaq is fighting another man but he grabs her arm and puts his other arm around her neck.
MAN : I’ve got the girl!
Will manages to get his arm around the neck of his man, but his hatchet is on the ground. He deftly flips it onto his foot, then kicks it into the air and catches it.
ROBIN : Time to disappear!
Will knocks down his man with the hatchet.
My gang! This way! He windmills his arm.
Djaq throws an elbow into her captor’s face and he falls. She sheathes her sword.
DJAQ : A woman, you’ll find.
They all scramble up a hill with Davina and her men close at their heels. The gang have the advantage of better conditioning and pull several steps ahead. They crest the hill with the other party trailing, struggling to climb up. When they finally reach the top, the way is empty. Nothing but a carpet of dead leaves between two tall large rock walls.
MAN : Where did they go?
DAVINA : Sarcastically Gone to meet their makers? Frustrated Take me to Nottingham, you idiots!
Davina and her men leave. A large trap door, hidden under the carpet of leaves, opens to reveal the gang underneath. Robin steps out first and looks around, smiles, and motions with his hand for the others to follow.
ROBIN : Come on.
Will steps up next to Robin. Little John hops out, Djaq behind him. Much stops between Will and Robin. Allan steps behind Djaq.
Great work, Will! Claps Will on the shoulder, looking up in amazement.
WILL : Oh, it’s nothing. Looks around at the door to see how it’s holding up.
MUCH : Nothing? Claps Will’s shoulder. Genius! Putting his fist into the air. I love our camp!
All laugh, delighted with success.
OPENING CREDITS
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. WAR ROOM. NIGHT. THUNDERSTORM.
Thunder crashes. Gisborne is looking at a large, round, 3-D map of Europe. The Sheriff creeps behind him, unheard.
SHERIFF : Tell me... Gisborne flinches, startled ... you would rather have a woman, Gisborne.
GISBORNE : Pardon...
SHERIFF : Tell me you would rather have a woman than all this... power. We are so close.
GISBORNE : Indeed.
SHERIFF : Talking of our lady leper friends, time to go and get the [pokes Gisborne] pretty one and her daddy.
GISBORNE : Edward and Marian? If they resist, shall I use force?
SHERIFF : Get up to speed, Gisborne. Use force anyway.
The Sheriff points to the door and Gisborne leaves.
SHERWOOD FOREST. OUTLAWS' CAMP. NIGHT. THUNDERSTORM.
Allan is going over their haul as Much cleans up after dinner. Robin walks around to Allan.
ROBIN : How are we doing, Allan?
ALLAN : Could have been nasty.
Allan hands Robin a knife. Robin inspects it.
ROBIN : Turns to Allan. Those men were well trained.
ALLAN : The woman wasn’t bad. Nearly had you for a minute there.
ROBIN : Nah, I doubt that. Allan holds up a large silver ring with a large hawk-like bird. Robin sees it. What’s that?
Robin takes the ring from Allan.
ALLAN : Boss lady’s ring.
ROBIN : Holds it up to the light. Hang on. That’s the Sheriff ’s insignia.
ALLAN : So what?
Robin looks up at the lightning and thunder, then at Allan.
Well what ? We robbed a friend of the Sheriff.
ROBIN : But it’s more than a friend if she shares the Sheriff ’s insignia.
Robin holds up the ring again and looks up at the lightning flashing as thunder crashes. Everybody looks up at the omen.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. WAR ROOM.
The Sheriff looks up at the storm. Davina enters behind the Sheriff ’s back. The Sheriff hears rattling and knows she has arrived. He turns around, ecstatic to see her.
SHERIFF : Oh! Oh, the glamorous one.
DAVINA : Chuckles. The successful one.
SHERIFF : Ni-ni-ni-ni.
The Sheriff and Davina wave their little fingers at each other as Davina chirrups and plays back.
So, hm... so how was your journey?
DAVINA : Annoyed I ran into an old friend of yours.
SHERIFF : Hood?
DAVINA : Hmm.
SHERIFF : He didn’t hurt your babies?
DAVINA : Glances back at the box in the doorway. No, but I do want him caught. Puts a hand on the Sheriff ’s shoulder and they walk around the table.
SHERIFF : Don’t worry. Everything’s in place. Tomorrow when our friends gather, they gather to watch Hood die.
DAVINA : Smiles Hmm. The plan is...?
SHERIFF : The whole garrison. Five hundred men.
DAVINA : Hmm. Playfully “Men” is good, but a woman is better.
KNIGHTON HALL. INTERIOR. MAIN ROOM.
Sir Edward is sitting downstairs, slurping soup from a spoon and cup.
MARIAN :'S BEDCHAMBER.
Marian, dressed as the Nightwatchman, climbs in through the window and passes Robin shadowed in the doorway, pushes back her hood and removes her mask and face-scarf.
MARIAN : : Playfully And that’s all I’m taking off, until you go away.
Steps aside to light the candles in her room.
ROBIN : Chuckles slightly, then steps into the room You’re a spoilsport, Marian. Glances at the ring in his hand. What do you make of this?
Robin tosses the ring to Marian, who has just lit a candle.
MARIAN : Looking at the ring The Sheriff ’s insignia? Lights another candle as Robin speaks.
ROBIN : We took it off a woman on the way to Nottingham today, and she had men and they were well trained. It was like a military unit. Points at the ring in Marian’s hand. And she’s been granted the Sheriff ’s insignia.
MARIAN : And what does that mean?
ROBIN : Well, I don’t know. Marian blows out the taper. I was hoping you or your father might know.
MARIAN : Steps towards Robin. Crestfallen I get the feeling we’re not too welcome in the corridors of power. Hands the ring back to him.
ROBIN : Good. A bit eagerly Come and join my gang.
Marian’s face falls.
MARIAN : In your dreams. Turns away.
ROBIN : Wait. Robin pulls Marian back to him. Listen.
Robin pulls Marian’s head close and kisses her.
Did you hear it?
MARIAN : What?
ROBIN : That kiss spoke volumes.
MARIAN : Did it. What did it say?
Robin pulls Marian’s head into his chest.
ROBIN : It said, “Marian wants to come and join your gang.”
MARIAN : Scoffs quietly. Sadly Really. That’s not what I heard. What I heard was a little voice saying, [stands up to look at Robin] “Abandon your home, abandon your father, give up any hope of a normal life and take up arms with a man who thinks resistance is about showing off with a bow.”
ROBIN : That’s not fair.
MARIAN : And to do what? To wait for a king who, let’s face it, may or may not make it home. Robin laughs softly. What?
ROBIN : So you have been thinking about it then?
Marian reluctantly smiles in confession as hoofbeats approach. Marian and Robin step quickly to the window and peer out at Gisborne and a company of his men arriving.
Gisborne pounds on the front door. Edward looks up from his soup. Gisborne steps back from the door and looks up at the house in general.
GISBORNE : Sir Edward! Marian! Out now!
In the bedroom, Robin takes an arrow from the quiver on his back as he goes back to the doorway and fetches his bow. He sets the arrow and peers out the window.
MAIN ROOM.
Gisborne kicks in the door and a guard enters, draws his sword and points it at Edward.
EDWARD : Sir Guy?
GISBORNE : Hold him!
The guard grabs Edward and puts the sword to his throat.
MARIAN'S BEDCHAMBER.
ROBIN : I’m gonna kill him. Robin steps back to the door.
MARIAN : Oh, shoot first, think later?
Robin stops in his tracks at the doorway, but still looks angrily down the stairs.
MAIN ROOM.
EDWARD : I will not allow this!
MARIAN'S BEDCHAMBER.
MARIAN : Do you want my father killed?
Marian takes off her Nightwatchman’s cloak as Robin looks downstairs, shaking his head.
MAIN ROOM.
Gisborne stands facing Edward.
GISBORNE : Marian!
MARIAN'S BEDCHAMBER.
MARIAN : Look, if you respect me, you’ll do nothing.
Robin looks back at Marian.
GISBORNE : From downstairs Marian, you come down now or I will torch your house!
In Marian’s bedroom, Robin again starts to go out the door.
From downstairs: Answer me!
MARIAN : Do you respect me?
Robin stops, still looking out the door. Marian grabs his arm; Robin turns to face her and she looks at him sternly.
GISBORNE : From downstairs Don’t keep me waiting!
ROBIN : Robin steps back and relaxes a bit. I respect you.
MAIN ROOM.
Marian rushes down the steps.
MARIAN : Father!
GISBORNE : You come when I say!
MARIAN : Father!
EDWARD : I am unhurt.
MARIAN : to Gisborne: What do you want?
GISBORNE : Slowly circling around to face her. You’re coming to the castle. The Sheriff wants you where he can see you.
MARIAN : No, we’re not. My father is frail. Release him!
GISBORNE : Enraged You do not tell me what to do! Points to the guard. Burn the house.
MARIAN : Grabbing Gisborne’s arm Guy, no!
Gisborne throws off her hands. Marian is visibly frightened.
Please, Sir Guy.
GISBORNE : Better.
SOLDIER : With a torch Sir Guy?
Gisborne holds up a hand to him to wait.
GISBORNE : to Marian Beg.
Marian looks at her father, then resolves herself and turns to face Gisborne.
MARIAN : Slowly Sir Guy, please, I beg you.
GISBORNE : Much better. Takes the torch from the soldier and walks to the back of the room. But still not good enough. Lights the curtains with the torch.
MARIAN : NO! No! Don’t burn my house!
Gisborne continues to light a tapestry and a table.
NO! Don’t light my—
Gisborne pushes her out the front door as soldiers escort Edward behind them.
EXTERIOR.
Robin is hiding and watching behind a fence and shrubs. Gisborne mounts his horse as a sergeant shouts.
SERGEANT : Guards, to the castle! Move it!
Robin aims an arrow at Gisborne.
Come on, you vegetables! Get moving! Come on!
Marian sees the arrow, catches Robin’s eye, breaks contact and shakes her head no. Robin reluctantly lowers his bow.
Move out!
Robin disappears as Marian and Edward are led away to Nottingham and the house goes up in flames.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. EAST GATE.
Robin, hood up, is leaning on the corner of a building, watching the castle gate, chewing on a finger deep in thought. The castle gate is closed with three guards in front of it. Much stands beside Robin. Allan leans on a barrel behind them.
MUCH : Something’s up. That is proper lock-down. Can’t just be for Edward and Marian.
Robin looks up as three horsemen approach, cloaked in black. He watches them approach the gate.
ROBIN : Points at them with his chewed finger, concerned Now who is that?
One of the cloaked men shows the guard his ring with the Sheriff ’s insignia on his finger.
ALLAN : Flustered and bored Oh, why don’t you just knock on the door and ask the Sheriff ?
Robin glares back at Allan.
Well, we’re not going to find out much standing around here all morning, are we?
Robin shakes his head and resumes his watch.
MUCH : to Allan What do you recommend?
The gates open and the horsemen are let through.
ALLAN : Steps to Much Since you ask, I was gonna go to the tavern. I’ve got some new tricks I want to try out. Here, look at this. Pulls apart three brass cups and puts one between each finger and rattles them. Three cups, right?
ROBIN : Come on.
Robin walks away from the gate. Much and Allan follow.
ALLAN : No, no, come on. Robin, this is lovely, honest.
ROBIN : Since when have we been tavern tricksters, Allan?
ALLAN : If you’re gonna get all funny about Marian, why’d you let Gisborne grab her in the first place?
ROBIN : Be careful.
Much looks back at Allan.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. SHERIFF'S QUARTERS.
The Sheriff is looking at one of his birdcages. The door opens. Edward and Marian enter.
SHERIFF : Ah. The sanctimonious old fart... Marian glances at Edward. And her father. Chuckles.
Edward stands tall, Marian sullen. The Sheriff walks over and faces them.
I gather you’ve been careless with your wood fire. Steps over to the table.
MARIAN : You know full well that is not the case.
Edward leans over to her, silently begging her to be quiet.
SHERIFF : Sits on the corner of the table Tell me, whose side are you on? Mine or King Richard’s? Hm? The real world... or the old world...
EDWARD : Yours.
SHERIFF : Chuckles Come along. Picks up a skull from the table and takes a tooth from it. We both know that’s not true, don’t we?
EDWARD : Staring straight ahead I believe in justice. I believe in the rights of a free man.
SHERIFF : Sets down the skull and steps over to face him again Who cares what you believe in? Hm? I have a plan. And I will not tolerate dissent. Puts the tooth in his mouth. Chuckles slightly So... steps back... you are under house arrest, here in the castle, until I can find some use for you. Leaves.
MARIAN : Turns towards the door My lord sheriff, I must protest. Steps towards the Sheriff
SHERIFF : Stops You must?
MARIAN : My father is unwell. He must be allowed—
SHERIFF : Interrupting One more word out of you, missy, and your father will never be unwell again!
The Sheriff turns to leave as Gisborne enters.
GISBORNE : My lord, another one of our friends has arrived.
SHERIFF : Good.
The Sheriff and Gisborne leave.
MARIAN : Guy! Gisborne stops and turns around. Please. The castle is no place for an old man.
GISBORNE : Steps towards her You think you can humiliate a man at the altar? A man like me, and get away with it?
Marian looks guilty and hangs her head.
You’re wrong. Glares at her bent head, then leaves.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. THE CASTLE MAIN GATE.
Robin finds a place to watch the main gate. Allan and Much follow, bickering.
MUCH : Marian’s in there.
ALLAN : Yeah, she’s probably having cakes and ale with the Sheriff.
MUCH : In Allan’s face You just don’t get it, do you?
ALLAN : No, I don’t get anything. That’s what I’m saying. You know, we risk our lives to get money, then we give all of it away. What’s that about?
MUCH : It—
ALLAN : Continuing Now, I’m not being funny. We should get something. If we don’t get anything, we’re gonna get weak. We’ll get demoralised. Then how are we gonna help the poor ?
MUCH : You’re not weak.
ALLAN : No, but I might get weak. Anyway, doesn’t matter to you.
Leans on the wall.
MUCH : Why?
ALLAN : You’ve always been weak.
Robin was watching this last bit and turns back to face the gate, smiling.
MUCH : Very funny. Funny. You know, why don’t you just... just...
ALLAN : In Much’s face Why don’t I just what?
MUCH : Why don’t you just jigger off !
ALLAN : Jigger off ? You what? What does that mean, jigger?
MUCH : Points at Allan You know what it means. Turns to Robin.
ALLAN : Right. Walks off.
MUCH : Satisfied until he notices Allan is gone. What? Where are you going? Turns to Robin. Master?
ROBIN : Just let him go. He needs to cool off.
Much looks after Allan, then joins Robin.
We’ve forgotten about the poor today. We said we’d be here to hand out.
MUCH : Well, the Sheriff ’s not forgotten about them. Look at that.
Near the main gate, in the market area, Rose is tied to post.
Poor woman. Can’t let a day go by without trying to humiliate one of them.
ROBIN : For now, we’ll try the west gate. Come on.
Robin leaves. Much pulls up the hood of his cloak and follows.
TRIP TO JERUSALEM INN. EXTERIOR.
Allan wanders to the inn, looks up at it, then goes inside.
INTERIOR.
Allan looks around and sees a man fiddling with coins at a table. Allan sits down opposite him.
ALLAN : All right. Just had your wages?
MAN : What’s it to you?
ALLAN : I thought you might fancy doubling your money? Holds up the three cups on his fingertips.
OUTSIDE THE WEST GATE.
Robin and Much peek through a stack of large baskets at the gate.
ROBIN : There’s another one.
Another man cloaked in black stands at the gate. Robin looks intensely at the man as he shows his ring and looks around.
I know that man. Foster of Rotherham.
MUCH : Who is he?
ROBIN : Staring loathingly at the gate He’s a schemer. And he’s nasty. And he’s an enemy of the King. Glances at Much. The day Foster and the Sheriff get together is a black day for England. And if all those visitors are the same, then... Shakes head and sighs. Sits back. Go back to the camp and tell the others to get ready. And tell them the castle is locked down. And tell Will to think of a way to get over that wall.
MUCH : Turns to go, then realises Robin does not intend to go with him Where are you going ?
ROBIN : Chuckles. Well, if we get in, we’ll need uniforms. Pats the back of Much’s neck.
MUCH : Nods Ah. Leaves.
Robin looks up at the top of the wall, then pulls his hood around his face more and leaves his hiding place.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. MARKETPLACE. HIDDEN IN A STALE.
Robin watches three guards go by and ambushes the last one, pulling him into the doorway.
ROBIN : No offence. I need your uniform.
TRIP TO JERUSALEM INN. INTERIOR.
Allan is sitting at the table playing the “shell game” with the patrons.
ALLAN : I’m not being funny. Costs me money every time.
The cups swirl around the table. A man points to the first cup. Allan picks it up and there is no coin.
Oh, shame, shame. Picks up the middle cup and retrieves the coin. Thank you very much.
Another man sits down, holding up a coin. Allan puts it under the middle cup and swirls the cups around. The man taps the first one. Another man holds up a coin and picks the first one. Allan picks up the chosen cup.
Oh, unlucky, unlucky. Another go? Have another go!
The man leaves.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. MARKETPLACE.
Rose is still tied to the post. Robin watches her from the shadows.
TRIP TO JERUSALEM INN. INTERIOR.
Cups swirl. Again a man picks the first one and it is empty.
ALLAN : Oh-oh-oh!
The cups swirl and a man picks the middle one. Another man picks the first, and then another also picks the first. Allan raises the middle cup.
Oh-oh-oh, unlucky.
Allan raised the first cup to retrieve the coin. Suddenly the patrons scatter, but Allan is busy collecting coins and doesn’t notice them leave, but does realise that another man has just sat down opposite him.
Without looking up. Fancy a bet, mate? Looks up to see Gisborne. His face falls.
GISBORNE : Gotcha.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. MARKETPLACE.
Robin circles Rose and puts a nut into his mouth.
ROBIN : This the Sheriff ’s work? Takes another nut from his hand and pops it into his mouth, stepping in front of her.
ROSE : Speaking in a slightly Welsh accent Just go away.
Robin stops, a bit surprised at that.
Look, I don’t want any sympathy and I don’t want any manky food thrown at me. So unless you’ve got a better idea, go away.
ROBIN : Circles her again Well, how about I rescue you?
ROSE : Scoffs No thanks.
ROBIN : Stands close to her. Softly I am Robin Hood.
ROSE : Looks at him Really?
Robin takes a step and pops another nut into his mouth.
No thanks. I’m taking the punishment for me children. They were caught stealing scraps from the castle kitchens.
A boy and a girl appear in between tables under the marketplace’s large canopy.
Go on, shoo!
The children scamper off.
I’ve got to stay or they get it. It’s just for a day. So do me a favour and get lost.
ROBIN : Walks to her side If you and your children need extra food, my men and I can help.
Robin slips a coin into her hand behind the post.
Every few days we bring those in need a little food and money. I can add you to our list... if you give me your name. Glances behind him.
ROSE : What? You think because you gave me a coin I’m going to tell you my name?
ROBIN : A flustered sigh. Looks behind him. I have to go. You don’t have to give me your name. As he’s walking away Just be in the market on Thursdays. My men will find you.
ROSE : Hey! Robin steps back a bit. Rose. My name’s Rose.
Robin nods and leaves.
Thank you. Smiles slyly.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. SHERIFF'S QUARTERS.
The children enter. The Sheriff claps once.
SHERIFF : Excellent, my tiny tricksters. Bends down to them. Now, where’s Gisborne, hm? Tell Gisborne it’s show time!
The Sheriff wiggles their shoulders and they giggle.
Good. Very good.
DUNGEONS.
Another ragged-looking prisoner is tugging at Allan’s leg.
ALLAN : What? What? What?! What do you want?! Pulls his leg away from the prisoner and steps to the door, and sees Gisborne approaching.
GISBORNE : So tell me, where are your friends?
ALLAN : What are you talking about?
Gisborne turns and takes a few steps away.
Oh, not this again. You think I’m one of Robin Hood’s men, don’t you? The one who looks like me, what’s his name? Erm... Allan, right? No, no, my name’s Tom. Tom!
The Jailer drags another prisoner between Gisborne and Allan.
GISBORNE : Don’t insult me. Steps back to Allan. What’s happened? Robin Hood kick you out, hm? Tricking working men in taverns doesn’t sound very Robin Hood to me.
ALLAN : I told you, I don’t know Robin Hood.
GISBORNE : Show me some respect and maybe we can talk about a deal.
A soldier approaches.
SOLDIER : Sir Guy, Sheriff says it’s show time.
Gisborne raises his eyebrows at Allan, then turns to go.
GISBORNE : to the Jailer: Torture him.
The Jailer gets his keys.
ALLAN : Hang on. Hang on! I admit, all right? I’m Allan A Dale.
The cell door opens.
GISBORNE : Over his shoulder. Too late.
The Jailer grabs Allan.
ALLAN : I want a deal! You said a deal!
GISBORNE : Smiles Too late. No need any more.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. MARKETPLACE.
A man sharpens a broadaxe. The gates open and the portcullis rises. The children, escorted by two soldiers, the Sheriff and Gisborne come out. Marian follows, last. The townsfolk all stop and form a circle to watch. The guards at the gate cross their halberds in front of Marian and she is forced to stop. The Sheriff addresses the crowd.
SHERIFF : People... my dear people. These two young scallywags here think because they are children they can escape justice. Tuts. They have committed a crime! One of my men saw fit to take pity on them and their mother and allowed her to take a punishment for them. Very generous... misguided. They must lose a hand. Grips his hand.
The townsfolk mutter.
It is the law.
ROSE : Screams No. No! My children, no!
SHERIFF : Grimaces at the noise. Ah, motherly compassion. Very sweet, charming. Bring out the equipment.
ROSE : Please, they’re children. They meant no harm.
The soldiers bring the children forward.
Please don’t take their hands, please!
SHERIFF : Shut up!
Rose sobs as the executioner puts a cabbage on the block and chops it easily with his broadaxe.
Come along. Chop, chop.
Gisborne smiles slyly. The children’s hands are clamped down as the Sheriff gets out a parchment and reads.
I, Vaizey, Sheriff of Nottingham, hereby pronounce sentence on little tiny Billy and tiny little Jane, blahdi-blah-di-blah. Chop off their hands!
ROSE : Hysterically Somebody save my children!
Robin, from a nearby rooftop, shoots two arrows simultaneously into the block by the children’s hands. The townsfolk cheer. Marian smiles.
ROBIN : Touch those children and there’s an arrow in it for you, Sheriff !
SHERIFF : to the axeman Do it!
The man raises the broadaxe and Robin shoots it out of his hand. Another arrow severs Rose’s bonds.
ROBIN : Rose! Children! Run!
ROSE : They can’t! Help!
Marian suspects it’s a trap.
MARIAN : to herself No, Robin, don’t go down.
Robin climbs down a rope to the ground with his knife clenched in his teeth. He takes out a guard with his scimitar and a kick then runs around a table into the marketplace, kicks another guard, knocks aside the sword of yet another, pushes the last one in the back with his sword hand. He takes the knife out of his mouth.
ROBIN : to Rose The locks, quickly.
Robin tosses Rose the knife and she catches it.
GISBORNE : Now!
Several men in cloaks who have been standing around the marketplace, watching, pull off their cloaks and surround Robin with their swords pointed. Robin smiles smugly, thinking he can take on the newcomers as Gisborne smiles slightly. Robin spins around with his scimitar and realises 18 swords are too many. Marian stands, helpless and disappointed. Rose swaggers to Gisborne’s side. The Sheriff follows.
ROBIN : Clever. Very, very clever.
GISBORNE : Put down your weapon, Hood.
ROBIN : Drops his scimitar with a clatter. to Rose So tell me... are these even your children?
ROSE : Children? Shudders in abhorrence.
Robin shakes his head slightly, realising he’s been tricked.
Now... steps to face Robin... You show me your face... Davina pulls back his hood ... and I’ll show you mine.
She pulls off some fake skin as Robin stares, then she pulls off her wig and some false teeth to reveal the woman Robin robbed in the forest. She smiles slyly.
SHERIFF : Steps over. Did I tell you I had a sister, Hood?
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. WAR ROOM.
The Sheriff, facing the window, turns around.
SHERIFF : Raises his arms. My friends.
Eight men in black cloaks sit around the edge of the round room, each between pillars. A banner, wrapped into a cylinder, hangs from the centre of the ceiling.
Our time has come. One at a time, crosses his fists over his chest and steps to the centre of the room. King Richard is marching on Jerusalem. By the time the year is out, he will be home. So, Operation Shah Mat must move to the next phase. Arms outstretched, palms up. Mobilise your men. Motions with his hands. Bring me your bids for funding. We must be ready. Wherever King Richard lands on English soil, we must be there to greet him... brings his arms in... to embrace him. Holds up his hands. Oh, oh, the King is dead. The Sheriff chuckles and the others laugh.
Long live the King. So, meanwhile, today’s entertainment. Circling a large trap door in the floor: My friends, allow me to introduce... from high lord to low criminal... from noble to nothing... from rank to skank... from hero to zero...
The Sheriff snaps his fingers and the banner drops from the ceiling revealing Robin, hanging from his bound hands. Robin struggles to get free.
... Robin Hood.
Applause.
Welcome to my new chamber, Hood. We are the Black Knights. Kisses his ring and then holds out the fist.
ROBIN : Oh, why so coy, Vaizey? Why not call yourselves the traitors? And Operation Shah Mat? Why not call it Checkmate, or better still, Kill the King.
SHERIFF : Oh, very good. He knows his Persian. Very clever.
ROBIN : The taxes, the money you’ve raised—
SHERIFF : Interrupting What did you think? Did you think I was going to buy myself a new rug? You don’t know me at all, Hood. Myself and my friends, we have no interest in money. It’s for an army of mercenaries. We want power. Between us, we will run the new England. We are the new England!
ROBIN : Well, then God help us.
SHERIFF : Yes, well, God is the only one that can help you now. Shame... because I really rather enjoyed our little skirmishes.
Davina steps slowly forward.
Davina.
Davina snaps her fingers and four soldiers remove the floor under Robin to reveal snakes rattling and hissing.
DAVINA : Proudly My babies.
Robin is panicked now. The Sheriff looks up sideways at Robin.
SHERIFF : Death by fanging?
The Sheriff and Davina laugh.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. DUNGEONS.
Allan is tied to a post.
ALLAN : Listen, listen. We can sort this out?
JAILER : Shut it!
The Jailer punches him in the stomach and circles him.
ALLAN : How about a little bet, eh? You a betting man? How about a little wager?
The Jailer slaps him, then leans an arm on Allan’s shoulder.
JAILER : That’s no, by the way. Leaves.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. WAR ROOM.
The Sheriff laces his fingers and bends them back to crack the knuckles.
SHERIFF : Inch by inch, Hood, you’ll be lowered to your death.
The Sheriff pulls a small paddle out of a winch. It rolls a bit, then stops, dropping Robin a bit towards the snakes. The Sheriff turns back to Robin.
My friend, Sir Guy, would like to ask you a question before we say goodbye.
GISBORNE : Steps around with Robin’s bow in his hand Tell me, Hood, who is the Nightwatchman?
ROBIN : Chuckles I don’t know, Gisborne! But I do know I’ll kiss him when I see him for stealing from you!
Gisborne lowers the bow, looks down and away from Robin.
And for showing it’s not just me. You see, there are people like me and the Nightwatchman all over England who will stand up for justice.
Gisborne suddenly punches Robin in the stomach with the bow.
INTERIOR CORRIDOR OUTSIDE THE WAR ROOM.
Marian sneaks in and, out of sight of the guards, pulls her Nightwatchman mask out of her vest and finishes dressing as the Nightwatchman.
WAR ROOM.
Gisborne continues to beat and berate Robin.
GISBORNE : Look at you. A noble life and you threw it away. For what?
Punches Robin with the bow.
So you could be king of the paupers?
Hits Robin with the bow.
Did you think they’d love you?
Punches Robin.
Did you think they’d kneel at your name?
Punches Robin three times.
INTERIOR CORRIDOR.
Marian pulls up her hood.
WAR ROOM.
GISBORNE : Trust me. You’re not dead yet and they’ve forgotten you already.
Gisborne hits Robin.
INTERIOR CORRIDOR.
Marian, outside the door, knocks out the two guards. Gisborne hears the clamour and looks at the door. Marian goes to the door and tries to open it, but it’s locked. She pounds on the door, then puts an ear to it.
WAR ROOM.
Gisborne goes to the door, looks out through the keyhole and sees the Nightwatchman running off. Looks back at the Sheriff.
GISBORNE : The Nightwatchman.
SHERIFF : Shocked What?
Gisborne grabs the key from the wall and unlocks the door as Robin slips another notch.
INTERIOR CORRIDOR.
Gisborne notices the two guards lying on the floor. He looks right and left to look for the Nightwatchman, who out of sight, pressed up against the ceiling. As Gisborne picks a direction and starts to walk, Marian falls to the floor behind him and kicks him to the floor. She looks in and sees Robin hanging and the Sheriff, then she runs down the corridor. Gisborne pokes his head back in the room.
GISBORNE : The Nightwatchman! Get after him! Runs out.
SHERIFF : A double execution. Very good.
Robin looks down at the Sheriff, half with concern for Marian, half in contempt. Several soldiers run out after Gisborne. The Sheriff follows. Davina watches them go.
THE MAIN DOORS.
Gisborne and the soldiers run outside and stop to look for the Nightwatchman. Not in the courtyard, not past the portcullis, not by a cart in the courtyard, not up on the battlements. Then they hear footsteps past the cloister and they see the Nightwatchman run around the corner out of sight. Gisborne and the soldiers chase her.
WAR ROOM.
DAVINA : My friends, I suggest you retire to your quarters and we reconvene tonight. Smiles.
The Black Knights all get up and leave. Davina puts the paddle back into the winch and looks at Robin, who breathes a sigh of relief.
ROBIN : Thank you.
DAVINA : Steps towards Robin So, handsome... I almost regret tricking you now. A clue: no.
EXTERIOR CORRIDOR.
Gisborne and the soldiers look down the empty corridor, then slowly advance. Gisborne looks up and points to the soldiers. The Nightwatchman sits on a beam overhead.
Gisborne holds up his small curved dagger.
GISBORNE : Remember this, Nightwatchman?
Marian flips her legs over her head and drops to the floor. The two soldiers behind her grab her.
Take off your mask. I want to see your face when you die.
Marian kicks away the dagger, kicks Gisborne in the groin and pushes her feet off his doubled-over form to flip backward and out of the grip of the soldiers, whom she kicks. The Sheriff comes up from behind her and puts a knife to her throat.
SHERIFF : Your mistake, my friend. You should have run when you had the chance!
Marian back-punches the Sheriff. He grabs his face and lets her go. Two more soldiers behind him draw their swords. Marian holds out her arms and motions with her hand to come and get her, then she jumps through an opening to the courtyard below.
to the soldiers: Help me up, you idiots! Gisborne! Grabs Gisborne. Get him!
GISBORNE : Don’t worry. Draws his sword. He’s mine!
WAR ROOM.
Robin tries to loosen the rope around his wrists.
DAVINA : Oh, what’s the matter? Does nobody love you? That’s your real weakness, isn’t it? You need people to love you.
ROBIN : It’s better than needing reptiles to love you.
DAVINA : My brother loves me.
ROBIN : Like I said.
Davina, offended, pulls the paddle out of the winch, which drops Robin a bit.
DAVINA : Holds up the paddle. Looks like you’re gonna die without an audience, Hood.
Davina appears to leave, but hides behind a pillar instead. The winch drops Robin again.
ROBIN : Think. Think.
Robin sees a rack of spears in front of him, standing in front of a pillar. His bow is leaning against it.
COURTYARD.
The Nightwatchman runs to the portcullis, but the soldiers there are blocking the way, swords drawn. She turns around to see Gisborne advancing. Gisborne jabs his sword at her, then swings it and she ducks. Marian swings her leg into his groin again, then faces the two soldiers behind him. The Sheriff is watching.
WAR ROOM.
Robin swings on his rope, trying to catch the rack with his feet. They hit the rack and he pulls it towards him, spears clattering down and his bow with them. One of the spears is stretched across the hole in the floor, his bow resting on its end. He smiles as he is lowered to his “bridge” and gets a foothold.
COURTYARD.
The Nightwatchman cartwheels to the gate, sees the soldiers there and runs to the tower entrance.
SHERIFF : What’s he doing? Why isn’t he running away? Yells to Gisborne He’s creating a distraction!
Gisborne runs after the Nightwatchman with two soldiers.
WAR ROOM.
Robin steps on the spear, then as he is lowered more, gets his knees around it. He is lowered again and he twists his right foot in the rope to hold himself up, his left knee still over the spear. He looks down at the snakes below as he is lowered more.
COURTYARD.
The Nightwatchman runs along the battlements, chased by the two soldiers, and goes to the top of the tower.
SHERIFF : You’re wasting your time, my friend! Robin Hood is already dead! Chuckles once.
Marian stares at the Sheriff a moment, then turns to the outside and jumps down. The Sheriff is puzzled.
Outside the castle walls, the Nightwatchman lands on her feet.
WAR ROOM.
Robin watches the spear as he is lowered down, pulling on it with his knee. The spear breaks and his bow is launched up. It falls into his waiting bound hands. Robin does a doubletake at the spear tip hanging over the edge near him.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN.
The Nightwatchman runs past a clothesline, grabs a dress from it and heads into a secluded spot to change. She pulls off her hood, mask and face-scarf, and then, as she has time to think about it now, breaks down over the news that Robin is dead.
WAR ROOM.
Robin has managed to get the spear half and load it into his bow. Using a foot to press the bow forward and holding the string with his hands, he aims it at the winch and shoots, wedging the spear’s tip against the barrel and stopping its motion. He pulls himself up on the rope and uses his bow to help him grab the edge of the floor and crawl up. Once safe, he lies there, panting. Davina is still watching, smirking, amazed. Robin looks back at the pit, then sighs.
ROBIN : Oh, yes. Chuckles with relief.
A whip cracks. He looks up to see Davina and puts his head down, utterly dismayed.
Davina cracks her whip again, walking over to Robin.
DAVINA : Impressive.
Robin edges away from the pit. Davina puts her foot on his side and pushes him to his back.
What were you thinking you would do, if you did escape? Between us we have 10 000 men.Robin chuckles.
What was your plan, hm? Were you going to save England single-handed? Points her whip handle at him.
ROBIN : Not single-handed. There’s five or six of us. Tired chuckle.
Davina tries to push Robin into the pit with her foot but he grabs her leg, forcing her to lose her balance. Davina falls into the pit and screams. Robin quickly turns to look down.
Davina is lying still, nervous.
DAVINA : Help... Help.
Robin quickly crawls over to another spear head and rubs the rope between his hands against it.
Get me out! Get me out!
Snakes crawl over her.
Oh. Oh.
Robin’s rope snaps and he lowers his bow to Davina.
Help. Get me out.
The Sheriff arrives.
SHERIFF : Davina!
DAVINA : Brother!
SHERIFF : What have you done, Hood? You get my sister out of there right now!
ROBIN : Bending over the edge, holding his bow out. Don’t make any sudden— A snake bites Davina and she yelps. The Sheriff puts his hands over his mouth. ... movements.
SHERIFF : Get her out! Get her out!
Davina rolls over and gets to her feet. She grabs the bow and the Sheriff and Robin pull her out. The Sheriff cradles her head in his arms. Robin goes to his quiver by the door and gets an arrow.
There must be a cure... some medicines, yes?
DAVINA : Shakes her head. No.
ROBIN : Fits the arrow into his bow. Sheriff. Draws. Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t kill you now and put an end to your treason.
SHERIFF : Eyes for nothing but Davina. Shut up, Hood.
ROBIN : Then you die with your sister.
DAVINA : You haven’t told him, have you?
The Sheriff shakes his head, mouthing “No.”
Prince John has made the Sheriff a promise. If my brother should die an unnatural death, then the county of Nottingham and everything in it shall be obliterated.
Robin stares, his eyes troubled and his arm pulling the string shakes.
Every town and village will be burned. Every man, every woman, and every innocent little child hanged. Would you really want that on your conscience, pretty boy?
Robin’s eyes wander, then he lowers his bow as Davina winces in pain. Robin quietly turns and leaves.
SHERIFF : How long?
DAVINA : Not long. Shakes her head.
SHERIFF : Don’t die. You’re strong. You’re my strong sister.
DAVINA : I’m not strong. I was being you, so you’d notice me. So you’d... love me.
SHERIFF : I love you. I’ve always loved you. Davina relaxes and dies as a bell tolls. Ahh!
The Sheriff closes her eyes and Gisborne runs in. Gisborne stares at them.
I want him dead. Gisborne.... whatever it takes, I want him dead.
The Sheriff kisses Davina’s cheek as Gisborne leaves.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN.
Marian has had her cry and is leaving her secluded spot in her stolen dress. Robin peers out from behind a sheet hanging on the clothesline. Marian sees him, stares in disbelief for a moment, then smiles and rushes into his arms.
MARIAN : Robin!
ROBIN : Who died?
MARIAN : You did. The Sheriff said you were dead.
Marian and Robin release each other and turn to walk out of town.
ROBIN : The Sheriff. The Sheriff is plotting to kill the King with his friends, the Black Knights. They’re already dividing England between themselves. You can’t go back into the castle.
MARIAN : We must get word to the King: Nottingham is not safe.
ROBIN : It’s not just Nottingham. The Black Knights...
Both stop walking. Robin turns to face Marian.
The Black Knights, they’re everywhere. They’re taxing the poor of England to pay for an army of mercenaries.
Turns around to walk on.
MARIAN : Well, we must stop them. I must go back to the castle.
Marian turns to leave but Robin rushes to her, grabs her arm and pulls her back.
ROBIN : It’s too dangerous!
MARIAN : Robin! Having a spy on the inside when there is a coup being plotted is useful.
ROBIN : No. For once just listen to me!
MARIAN : And my father is in there. Robin, I have to go back.
ROBIN : Marian, I can’t protect you in the castle.
Marian puts her left hand around the back of Robin’s head.
MARIAN : Two minutes ago I thought you were dead and I would have given anything for another chance to be with you.
Robin holds Marian’s head in return.
ROBIN : Well then take that chance, and come with me.
MARIAN : Listen.
ROBIN : What?
Marian kisses Robin.
MARIAN : A little voice saying, “Yes, when the King is home, safe.”
Marian turns and goes back to the castle as Robin anxiously watches her go.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. MARKETPLACE.
Robin walks towards the castle gate, looking for the gang.
Gisborne jumps in front of him from a table where he had been sitting with his sword.
GISBORNE : Hood, you left without saying goodbye.
Four of Gisborne’s men appear and fall in behind Robin, arrows ready in their bows. Robin looks around.
to men: Take aim.
The men draw back their bows. Robin glances behind him and puts up his hands.
ROBIN : What? No more public humiliation, Gisborne? Eh? No more beating and berating ?
GISBORNE : The Sheriff doesn’t want to say goodbye, either. He just wants you dead now.
Robin glances back at the archers.
See you on the dark side. to men: Shoot him.
Gisborne turns to leave as Much runs in yelling with his shield. He jumps in behind Robin, turning to face the archers as Robin turns and ducks. The arrows hit the shield. Gisborne runs forward with his sword as Much tilts down the shield and looks at the arrows, surprised they all hit it. Little John takes out two of the men with his staff.
LITTLE JOHN : So it’s goodnight from me... Will takes out the two others with his broadaxe ... and goodnight from him.
Little John and Will nod at each other.
GISBORNE : Guards!
Much jumps and turns to face Gisborne as Djaq comes up behind Gisborne and taps his shoulder. Gisborne turns around.
What?!
Djaq flings powder in his face.
DJAQ : Pepper. Ouch! Jumps over to join her gang.
ROBIN : You see, Gisborne, that’s why I didn’t say goodbye.
Gisborne is shaking his head and moaning.
Because I didn’t want to see you cry.
Robin laughs as Gisborne looks up with red eyes, swinging wildly with his sword.
MUCH : Time to disappear?
ROBIN : Nods Yeah. My gang, this way. Come on!
Robin pushes Gisborne out of the way with his foot, then runs off through the town, his gang following.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. DUNGEONS.
Allan is tied to the post, head down, when he is splashed with a bucket of water.
GISBORNE : Been having fun? Sets down the bucket. Hood was here, did you know? Didn’t try and rescue you.
Allan looks up weakly.
So, I was thinking... one chance to live.
ALLAN : I’m not helping you kill Robin. I’m not helping you kill anyone.
GISBORNE : Yeah, I respect you for that. So let’s look at this another way, shall we? Steps to Allan. An exchange as we go along. A little information, a little money, a conversation.
ALLAN : What sort of conversation?
GISBORNE : Oh, a harmless one. If I need extra guards on a building, you let me know. If I need to reroute a convoy, that sort of conversation. I am not robbed... Robin is not killed. You’d be doing us both a service. Looks down into Allan’s face, then lays a heavy hand on his shoulder and circles behind him. You and I, we’re the ones who make our supposed betters look good. And they take us for granted. But what happens when they move on? Then it’s our turn. You want to help the poor, help yourself first. Holds up a purse on his hand. Make provision for the future. You will never be named. You will never be implicated. This is just between you and me. You be my eyes and my ears. And then when all this is over... holds up the purse by its strings... you will have money and position, and you can help the poor till your heart’s content.
Gisborne continues to hold the purse up as he turns away. Allan leans his head back on the post and closes his eyes, thinking.
SHERWOOD FOREST. OUTLAWS' CAMP.
Much stands in the kitchen. Djaq sits on a suspended bench next to it. Little John squats by the fire. Will, with a cup, and Robin sit opposite them.
MUCH : Well, it’s not the end of the world, is it? I mean, Marian’s all right, basically... a bit excited and we’ve got a camp.
WILL : Much, the Sheriff and the Black Knights are going to kill the King... take over England.
Robin is staring at nothing.
MUCH : Sighs. True. It is the end of the world.
Will briefly sneers at Much while slightly tipping his cup. Much walks over to Robin as Will sips from his cup.
Well, if we have learned one thing today it’s that you’re never going to Nottingham alone again, ever. Because if you had died... especially now—
ROBIN : Interrupting If I had died... today, Much... stands... or if I die tomorrow, you will carry on without me.
MUCH : How? We are Robin Hood’s men.
ROBIN : No. You are Robin Hood.
MUCH : What?
ROBIN : You are Robin Hood. Looks at Djaq. And you are. Looks at Little John. And you are. All of you. Looks back at Will.
MUCH : We’re not though, are we?
ROBIN : Listen to me. Listen. We are not just six outlaws in the forest. Allan approaches.
We are the spirit of England, and that is Robin Hood. And that, lads, that is this country’s only hope.
Allan sighs and enters.
LITTLE JOHN : Raises his cup. We are Robin Hood! Come on.
Little John hands Robin a cup from the table.
ALLAN : Hey up, lads.
Djaq sees Allan’s bruised face.
DJAQ : What happened to you?
ALLAN : Oh, tricked one punter too many.
MUCH : Oh, I could have told you.
Much hands Allan a cup as Djaq looks at Allan suspiciously, with just her eyes.
We are Robin Hood.
ALLAN : What?
MUCH : Just say it.
Allan glances at Robin.
ALL : Raising their cups. We are Robin Hood!
Allan looks down at the purse his raised cloak has exposed and he quickly brings his arm down and around to hide it again, then drinks, nodding.
