NOTTINGHAM CASTLE. SHERIFF'S QUARTERS.
The Sheriff fishes a bird out of a cage. Gisborne enters.
SHERIFF: Ah, Gisborne. Hold a bird. Come on. Here, come on. Give him some love, hm ?
Gisborne reluctantly closes his gloved hands around the bird.
Poor thing. It is poetry though, isn’t it ? Caged bird, a creature that would fly free, absolutely under my control. Chuckles. It’s good. I like it. Now, er, talking of caged prettiness... when will you marry Marian ?
GISBORNE: In due course.
SHERIFF: Oh, come along, don’t be coy. That’s not the arrangement, is it ?
GISBORNE: No. We will marry when the King returns.
SHERIFF: Ah. When the King comes. I might have news for you there. Goes around the back of the birdcage.
GISBORNE: Slightly eager. What news ?
SHERIFF: Peers into the cage. You know... sometimes I don’t feed them for, oo, three days. Cruel perhaps, but I find it makes them sing better.
GISBORNE: Impatiently: What news ?
The Sheriff looks at Gisborne, then the bird flies away.
SHERIFF: Oh, Gisborne.
SHERWOOD FOREST. NEAR A LARGE CAVE.
Djaq, with a lit torch, leads Allan, Much, Robin and Little John, the latter loaded down like a mule with tent poles, canvas and what else, through the forest towards the cave.
They stop near the entrance.
MUCH: I hate the cave.
ALLAN: It’s gonna rain again and it’s dry in there.
Allan sets the basket he’s been carrying by Djaq, who sits with the torch in her hand. Robin lights his torch from hers.
MUCH: It’s dark... and it’s, you know... horrible.
ROBIN: Passes Much with the torch. We voted, Much.
ALLAN: And you lost, five-one.
Djaq holds the torch to Allan so he can light his. Robin enters the cave.
MUCH: Yeah, well... I should have two votes, because I really don’t like the cave. Lights a torch from Djaq. In fact, I should have three, because I really really don’t like the cave.
CAVE. INTERIOR.
Robin and Allan enter, then Much and Little John. As Much enters bats flutter and shriek. Much yells and spins around, startled.
MUCH: Bats ! I hate bats. Bats are rats. Rats with wings.
Robin looks around as Djaq enters. Allan sets his torch in a hole in the ground in the centre.
DJAQ: No, they are intelligent. Bats make noises you cannot hear.
Much sets his torch into the ground and removes his cloak.
ALLAN: What’s the point of that ? Noises you can’t hear ?
MUCH: What if there is a noise nobody could hear ?
ALLAN: Shut up.
MUCH: And then if you were the only person in the world who could hear it... Because I am that person.
Much sets down his shield as Little John brings in the basket.
To see sense where others see no sense. Just like the bat.
Robin puts his torch into the ground by the front wall and sits down near it.
I take it back. I like the bat. Sits. The bat is my friend. The bat understands me.
Will runs into the cave, breathless.
LITTLE JOHN: What took you so long ?
Will says nothing but brings out a loaf of bread wrapped in a cloth.
MUCH: Ho-ha!
Will tosses it to Much, who catches the bundle.
Well done !
Robin sits along the wall, watching Will. Much unwraps the cloth and breaks off a piece.
Bread, good. Mmm.
Will is bent over, catching his breath and looking at Robin. Allan goes over to Much and tears off a piece of bread.
MUCH: All right !
Robin and Will stare at each other as Allan passes between them with his bread.
ROBIN: Will ?
Allan looks back and forth between them, confused.
What’s the matter ?
WILL: The King is coming.
They all look at Will expectantly.
OPENING CREDITS
MUCH: Mouth full: Richard ? To England ?
LITTLE JOHN: Sarcastically, walking between Will and Much: Yeah, that’ll be right.
WILL: It’s not a rumour, John.
Little John looks back at him.
I spoke to Thornton. He heard Gisborne talking.
MUCH: To England ?
WILL: To Nottingham. They’re saying he’s landed at Hull. He’s gonna come through here on his way to London.
MUCH: The King ? To Nottingham ?
Will nods. Oh, this is good, isn’t it ? to Will: The King ?
WILL: Quietly: Yes.
The others look at Will, knowing there’s something else he’s not saying, but Much goes on.
MUCH: Oh, this is a good day. After all, we have bread and the King is coming.
Will puts his hand to his mouth.
ALLAN: to Much: Will you just shut up ?
MUCH: No ! This is what we’ve been waiting for. The Sheriff will be ousted... and Gisborne. Then Robin can go home, I can go home, Little John—
Robin is still staring at Will.
ALLAN: Interrupts: Little John’s an outlaw. We all are.
MUCH: Robin will pardon you. Obviously.
ROBIN: Will ?
Robin stands up and pushes his hood back.
MUCH: Oh, this is great, isn’t it ?
Robin goes over to Will.
Well, we should have a feast ! This is wonderful !
ALLAN: SHUT UP !
ROBIN: Will.
MUCH: Well, excuse me for being pleased that all our prayers are answered.
ROBIN: Tell me. Will stares at him sadly. Robin circles behind him. Come on, tell me.
WILL: Gisborne is saying... Now the King’s coming back, Gisborne is saying...
ROBIN: Gisborne is saying he will marry Marian.
Will nods sadly.
MUCH: Realising. Ah.
Allan scratches his head. Djaq frowns slightly.
ROBIN: Looks around. She will never go through with it. Goes to squat by Much’s torch.
WILL: Gisborne says the wedding’s on Saturday.
Robin looks back at Will, fearful.
KNIGHTON HALL. EXTERIOR.
Marian is weaving a basket and Edward is tending the garden when Gisborne walks up.
GISBORNE: Marian. Sir Edward.
Marian faces him.
I bring good news. There’s something I... No.
He grabs Marian’s legs and picks her up.
MARIAN: Oh ! What are you doing ?
EDWARD: What do you think y—
Marian kicks out to the side and leaps back to her feet. Gisborne is taken by surprise.
Sir Guy !
Marian flips her hood back over her shoulder.
GISBORNE: Astonished. I apologise. I just wanted to sweep you off your feet.
Marian gives a slight chuckle, faintly.
Will you come with me to Locksley ?
MARIAN: Why ?
GISBORNE: There’s something you should see.
LOCKSLEY.
Several clotheslines between the manor and the pond have sheets hung on them.
LOCKSLEY MANOR. MAIN ROOM.
Gisborne quickly steps inside and Marian follows.
THORNTON: Lady Marian.
MARIAN: Thornton.
Thornton glances at each of them, then leaves.
GISBORNE: Come with me. There’s something I want to show you.
Gisborne goes upstairs. Marian hesitates at the foot, then follows.
MASTER’S CHAMBER.
Gisborne pulls aside the curtains in front of the alcove/window, revealing a chest.
GISBORNE: I show you this.
Marian hesitantly steps down into the room, looking cautiously curious. Gisborne grabs a handful of coins and lets them fall back in.
My wealth.
MARIAN: Why ? Er... I’m not sure what this means.
GISBORNE: This means everything. Steps slowly to her. This means that I am a man of substance, wealth. I can provide for you.
Marian frowns at him.
I’m a man of power... the Sheriff and I, increasingly with Ki—Prince John. This means that I am a man of lineage.
Gisborne holds out his hand to Marian, who stares at it, then takes it and Gisborne leads her further inside.
The Gisborne heritage is a proud one.
Marian crosses to the alcove.
I will be glad to continue that line... steps to her... with you... as my wife.
MARIAN: Something has changed.
She looks at Gisborne, who is smiling slightly.
The King is returning.
Gisborne’s smile widens briefly.
EXTERIOR.
Robin, in just his undershirt, and Much hide among the hanging sheets, watching the house. Marian exits the manor on her horse, stops and glances back at Gisborne, who puts his hand on the back of her horse, looking at her, and then goes back inside. Marian is about to start her horse when she sees Robin. She frowns and Robin shakes his head slightly, marking his disapproval. Marian stares at him as she rides by. Robin steps through the sheets to watch her go, as does Thornton.
THORNTON: Mary ! Thomas ! Come on ! Get with it. There’s work to be done. Turns around and sees Robin, then goes over to him.
Robin, I don’t know what to say. I am sorry.
ROBIN: Tell me what you know. Faces Thornton and puts his hands on his hips.
THORNTON: Ah, the King comes on Saturday. The wedding takes place on Saturday here at Locksley. Er... they’re going to decorate the church. Points out at the church.
Robin puts his hand on Thornton’s shoulder and they walk a few steps.
ROBIN: I need you to cast your mind back... to my absence. Gisborne was unwell, or so he said. Stops. The truth is he went to the Holy Land to try to kill the King.
THORNTON: Taken aback, thinks. Robin, I’d love to say that you were right, but... Robin starts pacing ... he was here. He was unwell.
ROBIN: Turns back to Thornton. But no-one was allowed to see him!
THORNTON: Shhh. A fever, a contagion.
ROBIN: Conta— Turns around in frustration.
THORNTON: But the physician came every day. I cooked the master’s meal every day. The physician took it in to him.
ROBIN: Shakes his head. No.
MUCH: Who was this physician ?
THORNTON: Turns to Much: Erm... Pitts is his name.
ROBIN: And where does this Pitts live ?
THORNTON: In Nottingham now, in Battley Street.
Robin walks away and Thornton follows.
But... Robin...
ROBIN: Without turning around. This wedding cannot happen.
Much hurries to follow Robin as he picks up his bow and jacket.
KNIGHTON HALL. EXTERIOR. NEAR SUNSET.
Marian is practising sword manoeuvres against a large post. Robin arrives behind her, holding a stick behind his neck with both hands.
ROBIN: I would prefer if you did not visit my house... Marian stops ... until it is mine again.
MARIAN: Not looking at Robin. Guy wanted to show me my future fortune as Lady Gisborne.
ROBIN: Crosses in front of Marian to face her. And what ? He showed you some trinkets ? Made you agree to go along with the wedding ?
MARIAN: Swings sword at post. You know I have no choice. I promised to marry him when the King returned.
ROBIN: Under duress.
MARIAN: Yes, under duress. Stops and looks at Robin. Proving my loyalty to save my life and my father’s.
ROBIN: A promise made under duress is no promise at all.
MARIAN: And what, you think I should just back out and Guy will smile and release me ? If he knew I betrayed him, if he knew I was the Nightwatchman, he would lash out, and not just at me. At my father.
Robin walks off, flustered. Marian looks after him and “hmpfs” like she has won. Robin turns around.
ROBIN: Why do you always do this ?
MARIAN: What ?
ROBIN: Use your father as an excuse for doing nothing.
MARIAN: Because my father needs me !
ROBIN: And you need him ! Because without him, you would have to make a choice.
MARIAN: Oh, very well then. I am making a choice. I am choosing to marry Gisborne.
Robin can’t believe what she’s saying.
Is that what you want me to say ?
ROBIN: I will deal with this.
MARIAN: How ?
ROBIN: Steps up and leans in towards Marian: I will expose him as the liar and the traitor that he is. Then you will not have to marry him.
MARIAN: Robin, please, do not make this more difficult than it already is !
ROBIN: But you do not love him !
MARIAN: He has qualities !
ROBIN: What qualities ?!
MARIAN: I believe his feelings for me are genuine. He has wealth and security—
ROBIN: Interrupts: What do you mean, wealth ?! You’re supposed to be the Nightwatchman.
Enter Edward from the house.
You should steal from Gisborne and give to the poor, not acquire wealth yourself !
MARIAN: Do not tell me what I should be doing, please.
EDWARD: Robin !
ROBIN: to Marian: Look at me. Look at me. I will deal with this !
EDWARD: Robin. Can’t you see that you’re upsetting Marian ?
Marian goes into the house. Robin leans against the post for moment, the leaves.
MAIN ROOM.
Marian is frustrated at herself. She knows she has to marry Gisborne but at the same time appreciates what Robin is doing.
Edward enters.
EDWARD: I must leave for Merton. Will you be all right ?
MARIAN: Nods slightly. You have some scheme ?
EDWARD: The Sheriff has a scheme. I think he intends to kill the King in Nottingham. He cannot risk losing the shire.
Marian is disappointed.
I must act. Merton is loyal to me and to the King. He will help.
MARIAN: And my marriage... slowly: I must go through with it. A man must... protect his king. A man must fight for his king.
EDWARD: Steps to her. If I could protect you and the King, I would.
MARIAN: I know. Smiles. Anyway, I have a plan of my own.
EDWARD: What, the Nightwatchman ?
MARIAN: One final fling, something to make me feel more comfortable in my marriage.
EDWARD: Puts his hands on Marian’s shoulders. You are my world, you know that.
MARIAN: Marian smiles. I am marrying a man I do not love. There are worse things in heaven and earth. And I am glad... and proud... that you are my father. My wonderful, honourable father.
EDWARD: nudges her cheek and leaves.
MARIAN’S BEDCHAMBER.
Marian takes off Gisborne’s ring and puts it under a candle on a stand. She stares into the antechamber where her costume is waiting, then steps inside and stares at it.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. BATTLEY STREET.
The gang are dressed in their cloaks at Pitts' house. Little John and Djaq are first.
LITTLE JOHN: Battley Street. Yeah, the physician’s.
Little John pulls a wooden shutter closed and leans against the corner of the house. Much goes to the house across the way and looks out at the street.
MUCH: Master, all clear.
Robin steps around the corner and opens the door to the house. He opens the shutters Little John just closed. Djaq steps between them.
DJAQ: The physician’s on his way.
ROBIN: Let’s see what Pitts has to say about Gisborne’s illness.
LITTLE JOHN: Aye.
Beside the house, Will sits on a table. Much stands beside him. Allan leans against the house on Will’s other side.
MUCH: I was thinking, we spend our lives skulking, hiding in shadows. I’ve grown used to it. Be strange when it’s over.
WILL: Hard to imagine.
MUCH: Well, soon it will be real. If Gisborne is exposed, Robin will be restored, and I will have my lodge, my Bonchurch.
Robin circles around behind them.
DJAQ: Robin !
WILL: Allan, what will you do ?
Robin goes around the corner and follows Djaq backwards into the house.
ALLAN: Me ?
Little John walks to and stands in the door.
Well, live in my lodge. Yeah, you know, servants and that. What about you ?
WILL: Carpentry, I s’pose. Wood.
MUCH: Walks between Allan and Will towards his post. There’s Pitts.
Will walks past Allan to another window. Pitts comes, carrying two large baskets of food. Much leans against the house and Allan knocks on the windowsill. Pitts opens the door and enters.
PITTS' HOUSE. INTERIOR.
Pitts sets down his baskets as Allan looks in. Pitts pours himself water from a pitcher and is about to drink when he sees Robin standing across from him. He looks slightly right and sees Djaq waving at him as she lies on the stairs.
PITTS: Lowering his cup: I have nothing of value.
ROBIN: What was the trick ?
PITTS: What trick ?
ROBIN: You are the physician who treated Guy of Gisborne in Locksley a year ago ?
PITTS: You’re Robin.
ROBIN: What was the trick ?
PITTS: There was no trick.
ROBIN: Quietly. I see. Sniffs. So tell me... what illness did he have ?
PITTS: Well, difficult to say. Fever, contagion, the humours out of balance—
ROBIN: Interrupts: Do not lie. My humours are out of balance.
PITTS: He was very ill. He is lucky to be alive.
ROBIN: I do not have time for this. You tell me the truth.
PITTS: You’re a peace lover. I have heard.
He sets down his cup, shakes his head and steps backward towards Little John, who steps forward out of the shadows.
You will not harm me.
Pitts turns around right into Little John and immediately turns back to face Robin. Robin throws his knife into a post right above Pitts’ head. Pitts is frightened.
ROBIN: You think you do Gisborne an innocent favour ? You do not. Steps forward and leans on the table. This is a matter of treason. Admit your part now, and when King Richard returns I will speak for you.
PITTS: I established a quarantine. The servants prepared their master’s meals,
Robin steps around the table to him.
I took the meals in to him. I sat there for an hour at a time, ate the meals myself... brought out empty dishes.
Robin faces him.
ROBIN: You’re a fool.
Djaq comes quickly down the stairs.
PITTS: I meant no harm. Sir Guy had business in London.
ROBIN: He had business in the Holy Land. He tried to kill the King.
PITTS: Whispers: I had no idea. Forgive me. What can I do ?
Much appears in the window.
MUCH: Master, soldiers.
ROBIN: I will require you to speak in evidence... takes his knife out of the post... before the King.
PITTS: I... really ? Do you think I-I— Robin holds the knife in front of his face. Yes.
ROBIN: Pats Pitts’ face. Good decision.
Robin leaves. Djaq puts her hood up and leaves. Pitts stays put, his back to the post, smiling slightly.
LOCKSLEY MANOR. EXTERIOR. NIGHT.
Marian, as the Nightwatchman, sneaks past a guard’s back at the tunnel. He turns around and she cartwheels and knocks him out. She continues to cartwheel to the front door and knocks out a guard exiting. She sets the last guard down gently inside the door to avoid the noise of him falling, then she sneaks over and peers into the back room where Gisborne and his men are sitting. She sneaks upstairs.
MASTER’S CHAMBER.
Marian opens the master’s chamber door, closes it behind her, throws open the curtains of the alcove, opens the chest, gets a sack out of her shoulder bag and starts filling the sack with coins.
MAIN ROOM.
The second guard sits up.
KNIGHTON HALL. EXTERIOR. NIGHT.
Robin has come to tell Marian about the physician. He has climbed up to her window and is now peeking in.
ROBIN: Whispers: Marian ! Marian ! Sighs, puzzled. to the gang below: The torches are on, but there’s no-one home.
Robin uses the bar to let himself down to the ground.
ALLAN: Oh, that’s like Much.
Allan and Little John laugh.
MUCH: Yeah, very funny.
ROBIN: Where is she ?
WILL: Maybe she’s run away to avoid marrying Gisborne.
ROBIN: Not Marian. She’s not the running kind.
MUCH: Well, let’s come back tomorrow. Hands Robin his bow.
ALLAN: We can wait.
ROBIN: Sighs, thinking, then realises. I know where she is. Quick ! She’s stealing Gisborne’s money !
ALLAN: Oh, good work !
The gang run off for Locksley.
LOCKSLEY MANOR. MASTER’S CHAMBER. NIGHT.
Marian continues to load coins into a sack.
MAIN ROOM.
The second guard steps towards the back room.
GISBORNE’S MAN: Sir Guy ! The Nightwatchman !
In the back room, Gisborne looks up, then stands and goes out into the main room.
MASTER’S CHAMBER.
Marian looks up.
MAIN ROOM.
Gisborne and his men run upstairs.
MASTER’S CHAMBER.
Marian bars the door shut, trapping herself in as well. Gisborne rams the door with his shoulder, then peers through a crack in the door.
GISBORNE: Open up. There’s no escape.
Marian presses her back against the door.
to his men: Get me an axe. You two, outside. Cover the windows in case he jumps.
Marian runs to grab her bag as the guard throws up an axe to Gisborne. Marian goes to the window and sees the two guards below. Gisborne swings the axe at the door. Marian gasps and turns to the door. Gisborne swings the axe three more times and a narrow piece splinters off and clatters to the floor. Gisborne reaches a hand through, but he can’t yet reach the bar. He peeks inside as Marian stands, trapped. He swings the axe again, cutting off another sliver, and peeks in again.
Time to play, Nightwatchman.
Gisborne swings the axe into the door and an arrow lands right above it. Gisborne turns and looks downstairs.
MAIN ROOM.
Two guards in the main room are paying no attention to the front door but are watching Gisborne upstairs. Djaq runs in with a short sword and grabs one of them from behind and holds her sword to his throat.
ROBIN: Ah-ah-ah ! Mind if join in ?
Robin pulls another arrow from his quiver as Much comes in with a new recurve bow pointed at the back room. Little John holds his staff to a second guard. Djaq pushes her man against the stairs. Upstairs, Marian listens for her opportunity to escape. Allan comes in last and points his new recurve bow at the back room with Much.
GISBORNE: Locksley !
Robin smiles and aims the bow up at Gisborne. Will holds his broad-axe up to a third guard.
Gisborne steps towards the stairs.
Have you heard the news ? I’m to marry Marian.
Marian opens the door, eyes wide, and steps out with her bag. Robin eyes her. She looks at Robin. Djaq looks up. Little John looks at Robin.
Chuckles. I will think about you when I take her to the marriage bed. Looks at the Nightwatchman.
Marian steps forward, then suddenly kicks Gisborne down the stairs, and follows him down. When she reaches the bottom, Gisborne punches her in the stomach. Marian drops her bag, staggers a few steps and leans on a post as Robin’s temper .ares and he violently kicks Gisborne in the face, then grabs Marian and quickly helps her to the door.
ROBIN: Get the money !
Much and Allan hold off the guards as Djaq and Little John run outside. Gisborne tries to reach for the fallen bag but Will grabs it first.
WILL: Picking up sack: I’ve got it !
ALLAN: to Will: Go! Go!
Much and Will walk quickly backwards out the door as Allan points his drawn bow at Gisborne and the guards in turn, retreating backwards towards the door.
Good night, gents ! Backs out door.
EXTERIOR.
ROBIN: Split up ! Twos and threes ! You know where to meet !
All run off: Robin with Marian through the village, Will with Allan around the manor to their left, Little John with Much and Djaq around the house to their right.
MAIN ROOM.
Gisborne holds up a small curved knife which was concealed in his hand. Both are dripping with blood.
GISBORNE: Gotcha !
SHERWOOD FOREST.
Robin is running. Marian drops to walk as thunder rumbles. Robin stops at the top of a hill, looking around while waiting for her to catch up.
ROBIN: What do you think you’re doing ? This Nightwatchman business will be the death of you. Steps back down to Marian.
MARIAN: Disappointed. But these are my last days as the Nightwatchman. I will not be able to do it when I am at Locksley.
ROBIN: You do not have to go back to Locksley. I told you. Shakes his head as thunder rumbles again. You do not have to marry him.
Robin turns and takes a few more steps forward.
MARIAN: I have no choice.
ROBIN: Turns back to Marian. No ! I was coming to tell you. I have the proof I need. The physician. The physician will talk. I found him and he agreed to give evidence. He did not treat Gisborne. Gisborne was not there. He was in the Holy Land.
MARIAN: And he will say this in public ?
Robin nods, smiling. Marian chuckles in relief.
ROBIN: Puts his hand on Marian’s shoulder and listens. Shh!
MARIAN: Really ?
Robin nods, smiling.
Thank you. Half smiling, half ready to cry. I do not know how to thank you.
Marian puts her hand on Robin’s shoulder. Robin caresses her cheek
ROBIN: Lovingly: We’ll think of something. Winks at her. Come on !
Robin starts to run for the cave. Marian smiles weakly, tries to follow, gasps sharply, then collapses to a knee.
MARIAN: Softly: Robin ?
Marian chokes, looks up helplessly and grimaces in pain.
ROBIN: Marian ?
Robin’s voice echoes as he quickly runs to her and Marian blacks out.
SHERWOOD FOREST. THE CAVE. INTERIOR.
Little John enters the cave, dripping wet from the rain. He angrily walks past Much and Djaq by the fire, slams down his staff and removes his coat. Much looks at him questioningly.
LITTLE JOHN: No sign ! Of anyone !
MUCH: I don’t understand. Where are they ?
Robin enters carrying Marian.
ROBIN: John ! John !
Little John and Djaq come running. Little John takes Marian into his arms. Much stands staring.
LITTLE JOHN: I’ve got her, I’ve got her. Marian coughs. All right, all right.
ROBIN: Gisborne stabbed her.
LITTLE JOHN: What ?
ROBIN: In the belly. He bends over, catching his breath.
MARIAN: It is a shallow wound, not serious.
DJAQ: We need dry bedding. She needs to get dry.
ROBIN: to Much: Get a light.
Robin and Djaq lead Little John back to a rock laid with furs, on which Marian is laid.
MUCH: Carrying a torch: Here ! John ! John !
Little John takes the torch.
DJAQ: I need clean water to wash the wound. She examines the wound.
MUCH: Ah, here ! Here !
Much finds his flask and hands it to Djaq as Robin lights another torch.
DJAQ: Do you have wine ? Uncorks the flask.
MUCH: A little.
DJAQ: Nodding at Marian. For the pain.
MUCH: Yes. Runs to fetch the wine.
Marian winces and grunts as Djaq pours water on the wound. Robin stands helpless. Djaq examines the cut.
DJAQ: This is not long. What did he use ?
ROBIN: I don’t know. I thought he punched her.
Much returns with the wine flask and Robin takes it.
MARIAN: A dagger.
DJAQ: Can you feel this ?
Djaq pushes on the wound. Marian shouts and grimaces.
MUCH: Should you be pressing there ?
DJAQ: I need to look inside. She nods to Marian: Wine.
ROBIN: Here. He holds up the flask for Marian to drink.
DJAQ: This will hurt. Are you brave ?
MARIAN: Nodding: Do it.
Djaq spreads the wound open and Marian shrieks and arches her back.
DJAQ: Keep breathing. Marian starts to take shallow, loud breaths. Good.
ROBIN: She will be all right ?
Djaq looks up at Robin and nods very slightly.
DJAQ: I need to sew. Give me a needle.
Robin pulls a needle from the bottom of his jacket.
ROBIN: to Marian. This needle is thick... and blunt. Are you prepared ?
MARIAN: It is the way you sell it.
Robin smiles slightly at her use of his earlier words.
DJAQ: Give it to me. She gets a good grip with the help of her teeth, and starts to stitch. Robin grabs Marian’s hand as Djaq works.
SHERWOOD FOREST.
Allan and Will are sitting on a rock in the pouring rain. Allan is going through Marian’s bag. He pulls out a silver goblet and a small matching bowl.
ALLAN: Ho-ho-ho ! Look at this ! This is great stuff.
Will is sitting, refusing to take part.
WILL: The others will be waiting for us.
ALLAN: Yeah.
Thunder rumbles and Allan looks at Will.
Are you thinking what I’m thinking ?
WILL: Looks at Allan. Definitely: No. Looks away.
ALLAN: If you’re not thinking it, how do you know what it is ?
WILL: I don’t think like you do.
ALLAN: I’m not being funny, maybe you should !
Will stares at him.
What, you think Robin’s gonna need us when he’s a lord again ? Huh ?
Will stares.
It’s all right for them, innit ? Much with his lodge. What are we gonna have ?
WILL: This should go to the poor.
ALLAN: That’s us now. Will says nothing. Look, we were outlaws, right ? We had a job. We’ve got nothing now. We are the poor.
Will looks away.
You know what this is ?
WILL: Not looking at Allan. What ?
ALLAN: Severance pay.
Will looks at him with disbelief.
SHERWOOD FOREST.THE CAVE. INTERIOR.
DJAQ: to Marian: All right ?
Robin goes to sit against a nearby rock and starts to sharpen an arrow.
MARIAN: Yes. Thank you, Djaq.
DJAQ: I’m sorry.
MARIAN: Why ?
DJAQ: I did not think you would be so brave.
Marian smiles weakly. Robin watches Djaq leave, sharpening the arrow. Marian smiles at Robin.
DJAQ: to Little John, by the fire: Any sign of Allan or Will ?
LITTLE JOHN: No.
Robin stops sharpening and sits back against a large rock.
ROBIN: Well, the bad news is you’ve been stabbed. But the good news is you don’t have to marry the man that stabbed you.
MARIAN: Chuckles weakly. And what will happen ?
ROBIN: When the King comes to Nottingham, I will make an entrance. He will let me speak; he trusts me. I will present the evidence, the physician will corroborate it, and... and Gisborne will be done for.
MARIAN: Well, will he hang ?
ROBIN: Yes.
Marian weakly turns her head away, dissatisfied.
Marian, this is a man who would force you to marry him. A man who tried to kill the King, a man who stabbed you !
MARIAN: Looking back at Robin: Even so, I will never support hanging.
Robin looks like he will say something, but decides not to.
What ? Robin shakes his head. No, tell me.
ROBIN: Stares at her a moment, then shakes his head slightly. I think you feel for him.
MARIAN: He’s a human being.
ROBIN: Hardly ! Pauses. Jealously: You are stirred by him.
MARIAN: Stirred ? Chuckles and turns away.
ROBIN: He said it. And he was right, wasn’t he ?
MARIAN: Still looking away. Grow up.
ROBIN: Well, this morning when you thought you had to marry him, you were happily resigned to your fate. His... “qualities”... and his “genuine feelings.”
MARIAN: I was trying to be brave.
ROBIN: But why ? This whole Nightwatchman thing, it’s—
MARIAN: Interrupts: What whole Nightwatchman thing ? I am only doing what you do but with more intelligence.
Robin stands and goes to Marian’s side.
ROBIN: Angrily: You would have thought you would have learnt by now. Every time you go out, you get arrested... or stabbed... or betrothed. You should stay at home and do your embroidery !
Marian scoffs in utter disbelief. Robin squats down to pick up his knife and quiver, then realises what he just said and shakes his head.
I did not mean that.
MARIAN: Even my father, who is old and infirm
Robin stands up, turns his back to Marian and walks away. [louder] and has a lot more to lose than you do, even he supports me more than you do ! Writhes in pain.
DJAQ: Coming over to Marian: Marian, you need to sleep.
CAVE. EXTERIOR. THE NEXT MORNING.
Much is getting a fire started outside as Djaq returns from getting some herbs and berries. She sits down near Much, inspecting them.
MUCH: You think Marian’ll want anything to eat ? What is it girls eat ?
DJAQ: Not looking up. Special girls’ food.
MUCH: You know what I mean.
DJAQ: Ask her yourself what she wants to eat.
MUCH: She’s still asleep. I gave her a nudge earlier but she didn’t wake up.
DJAQ: Concerned: Really ? Still ? She looks up at the cave.
INTERIOR.
Marian is still unconscious. Robin is sitting on the ground at her side, slumped over asleep. Marian’s hand is resting on his back. Djaq runs in and crawls up next to Marian.
DJAQ: Marian ? Wake up !
Djaq undoes Marian’s clothes to reach the wound again.
ROBIN: Waking up: You said to let her sleep.
DJAQ: This is not sleeping. This is her body shutting down.
Robin immediately stands up.
Gisborne’s knife has caused damage inside. I must open the wound. Marian ! Marian ! She slaps Marian’s face.
MARIAN: Weakly: I do not feel well.
DJAQ: I need clean instruments.
ROBIN: What instruments ?
DJAQ: You stay here. Hold her hand. I’ll be quick. Do not let her sleep. Leaves.
ROBIN: Marian. Robin puts his arm under Marian’s head. Marian !
He shakes her chin, trying to wake her up. Marian !
EXTERIOR.
Djaq returns to Much by the fire. Much is cracking an egg into a ladle.
MUCH: She awake ?
Much puts the ladle into the pot of hot water as Djaq picks up her earlier find of herbs and berries.
DJAQ: Only just.
MUCH: Now, does she want an egg, or does she want some bacon ? She can’t have both, I don’t care who she is.
DJAQ: Pray to your god... and to mine. She is going to die.
MUCH: Die ? What do you mean, die ?
DJAQ: Her face. I’ve seen that look a thousand times before.
MUCH: Oh. Starting to panic: Ah, a, w-w-w-w-w-w-what do we do ?
DJAQ: I need hot water. I need clean instruments. Knives.
Much removes the egg from the water and throws the hot ladle away.
MUCH: Yes, er...
DJAQ: And here. She hands Much some berries. Grind this into a fine paste. Now.
MUCH: Yes. Er, er, now.
INTERIOR.
Robin kneels by Marian’s side.
MARIAN: I should go home. My father will be worried.
ROBIN: All in good time.
MARIAN: I’m a nuisance.
ROBIN: Yes, you are.
MARIAN: You were supposed to say no.
ROBIN: Jokingly: And you should be at home, doing your embroidery.
Robin lightly taps Marian’s nose. Both smile. Much comes in with a torch and a bowl, panicked, and sets the bowl down at Marian’s feet.
MUCH: Right. Here is the paste, and er... setting the torch into the ground ...the instruments are coming.
Marian lifts her head to stare at Much.
And er, Djaq is, Djaq is, er, coming, and I’m... Robin motions down with his hand to Much, indicating he needs to downplay it. ...I’m sure, I’m sure of...
MARIAN: I’m sure, I’m sure ?
MUCH: Somewhat confidently: I am sure.
MARIAN: Lays her head down. “I am sure” is reassuring. “I’m sure, I’m sure” is not.
MUCH: I am sure. It’s just, er, Djaq is... very, er... points outside. Er...
MARIAN: A bit flustered: Djaq is very what ?
MUCH: I’ll shut up.
ROBIN: Good idea.
MUCH: Yeah, I’ll go. Turns to leave, then thinks of something. Er, drink this.
Much leaves Robin the wine flask.
All of it.
Much runs out of the cave.
MARIAN: Oh, Much !
ROBIN: He means well.
MARIAN: What can Djaq have told him ?
Robin looks around, avoiding an answer.
It is not good, is it ? Tell me... the truth.
ROBIN: Maybe not so good. Here.
He holds up the wine flask to her lips. Djaq arrives and starts to undo Marian’s clothes as Marian grimaces from the burn of the wine.
DJAQ: I will cut you open.
Marian looks up at Djaq, wide-eyed with concern.
If I can find the damage, I will sew it up.
Robin turns around and walks a few steps away in worry.
MARIAN: Lifts head to look at Djaq: What are my chances?
Robin turns back around.
DJAQ: If I do not do this, none. If I do, very little.
Marian leans back, stunned by her words.
My father treated the wounded in the battlefield. He said, “Never lie to a wounded man.”
MARIAN: Or was it “Never lie to a dying man” ?
Robin looks very worried.
DJAQ: He said that, too. Leaves.
MARIAN: to Robin: So ? “Never lie to a dying man.”
ROBIN: You are not going to die. And I have never lied to you.
MARIAN: Oh, come on. Tries to sit up a little. We have never once spoken the truth to each other.
ROBIN: Now is not the time to argue.
MARIAN: A bit flustered. Do not tell me when it is the time to argue ! Robin chuckles. What ?
ROBIN: Well, I do not think there can be much wrong with you.
MARIAN: Calmly, quietly: I am serious. We have never once spoken the truth to each other. For instance, I call you a fool when I mean you are a hero. I criticise your actions and then mimic them myself as the Nightwatchman. I chastise Robin Hood—
ROBIN: Interrupts: Shh-shh-shh-shh.
MARIAN: I will not be shushed ! These might be my last words.
ROBIN: No, they will not be. They cannot be. Shifts his feet. Because we should be together. I should never have left you. I should never have gone to war. It was a mistake ! Steps back to Marian. And you were right.
Robin kneels at Marian’s side, his hand on hers.
I wanted glory. But believe me, the battlefield is the last place you will find it.
MARIAN: Quietly: You would have always regretted it if you hadn’t gone.
ROBIN: But not as much as I regret going. Not as much as I regret losing you. Marian, I should not have gone.
MARIAN: Voice trembling: Robin...
ROBIN: I—
Djaq enters, interrupting Robin.
DJAQ: Singsong: I love you, you love me, we all love each other.
Marian and Robin are frustrated as Djaq interrupts their moment.
Drink the wine.
Djaq pulls up Marian’s shirt with one hand, and holds a large knife in the other. Robin uncorks the flask and holds it to Marian’s lips.
ROBIN: Here. Lift.
Marian drinks.
DJAQ: Robin, hold her.
Robin stands up and holds Marian’s shoulders as Djaq cuts into her. Marian arches her back and screams. Robin grimaces.
Djaq is still trying to fix Marian’s wound. She is poking around inside trying to see what she needs to do. Marian moans, just about unconscious.
DJAQ: It’s too...
MUCH: Enters quietly. Master ?
Robin has his attention on Djaq.
DJAQ: Can’t reach it without causing further damage.
MUCH: Master...
DJAQ: Robin, press here. Stop the bleeding.
Robin reaches in, squirms a bit and hisses.
DJAQ: I cannot !
ROBIN: What ?
DJAQ: I am not trained. I don’t have the right instruments. I can’t do it.
ROBIN: Much, put your finger here.
MUCH: Me ?
ROBIN: Yes, you. Come on.
Much darts forward.
I need to get the physician.
DJAQ: There is no time.
MUCH: Puts his finger in. Ah, eugh.
ROBIN: Make me time.
DJAQ: Be quick.
MUCH: Here ?
DJAQ: Yes !
Djaq starts poking around again. Marian has stopped moaning, now fully unconscious. Djaq seems panicked.
SHERWOOD FOREST. THE GREAT NORTH ROAD.
Allan and Will arrive.
ALLAN: Yeah, this is it. The Great North Road.
Will leading a horse, stops and looks.
So which way are we gonna go ? Back to the cave or pastures new ?
WILL: What if they need our help, the others ?
ALLAN: What for ? They got away.
Will looks at him wide-eyed.
Where’d your old man go, and your brother, when they ran away ?
WILL: Scarborough. My auntie Annie.
ALLAN: Gets a flask off the horse and walks around to Will. Well... I wouldn’t mind meeting your auntie Annie. What do you reckon ? Drinks.
Will looks at Allan.
You know what I was thinking ? I was thinking Robin would want this for us. He would. He’d want the best for us.
Will grabs the flask and drinks as Allan steps around him, grabs the reins and starts walking. Will steps forward, looks back towards the forest, nods, raises the flask, drinks and follows Allan.
NOTTINGHAM TOWN. PITTS' HOUSE. INTERIOR.
Robin rides quickly up to Pitts’ house, leading another horse. He jumps off and runs to the window.
ROBIN: Pitts ! Pitts ! Goes to the door and knocks.
PITTS: Goes to the door and opens it a bit. Yes, yes, what is it ?
ROBIN: I need your help. A friend of mine has been stabbed. She... realises the truth he is about to speak... She is close to death.
PITTS: Opens the door fully. Bring her here.
ROBIN: Steps inside and closes the door. I cannot. I will take you to her. I’ve brought you a horse.
PITTS: Well, where is she ? I-I-I need to know in case anybody—
ROBIN: Interrupts: We must leave now. Puts his hand on Pitts’. There is no time.
PITTS: Puts his other hand on Robin’s. All right. Let me get my things. Goes upstairs.
Upstairs, Pitts grabs a large shoulder bag and starts putting things into it.
ROBIN: From downstairs. Hurry up !
PITTS: Slightly panicked: Don’t worry, my friend ! Everything is under control ! Goes to the window. to a soldier below: Psst. Psst.
The soldier looks up at Pitts motioning to him. The soldier taps his companion and they both move towards the house. Pitts resumes his packing, reaching for a large pile of rolled-up bandages and setting them all on top.
ROBIN: From downstairs: Hurry ! Come on !
Pitts grabs his bag and goes to the stairs.
Hurry up !
Pitts smiles and tries to put the bag’s strap over his shoulder but in his panic dumps the entire bag down the side of the stairs, its contents spilling everywhere.
PITTS: Hurrying down the stairs. I’m sorry, I’m sorry.
Robin helps him collect his things. Robin grabs at the rolls of bandages and looks at Pitts.
Bandages.
They finish packing as Pitts mutters.
Muttering: All right, let’s see. Yes, yes.
Pitts grabs his cloak and they head out the door. The soldiers watch them leave, then quickly head towards the castle.
SHERWOOD FOREST. THE CAVE. INTERIOR.
Much stands over Marian with his finger inside her. Djaq is sitting on the ground, helpless. Little John holds a torch over Marian.
MUCH: I’m not doing anything. I’m just pressing, right ?
DJAQ: Yes. There’s not much else we can do. The physician has the instruments.
MUCH: Should I be able to feel a heartbeat ?
DJAQ: Looks up. Yes.
Much looks at Djaq, panicked. Djaq gets to her feet and hurries over. She lifts up Marian’s eyelids, thinks a moment, then pounds a fist on Marian’s chest. Much grabs her arm.
MUCH: What are you doing ? What are you doing ? You’ll hurt her.
DJAQ: Trust me, Much. Where she is she cannot feel a thing !
Djaq pulls her arm away and pounds three more times.
******
In the forest, Robin and Pitts gallop towards the cave. Pitts flips a bandage behind him.
******
Djaq pounds twice more.
DJAQ: Anything ?
MUCH: Shakes his head vigorously. Oh come on. Come on, Marian.
******
Robin and Pitts gallop towards the cave.
******
Djaq pounds on Marian’s chest.
******
Robin and Pitts gallop towards the cave.
******
Djaq pounds on Marian’s chest.
******
Robin and Pitts gallop towards the cave.
******
Djaq pounds on Marian’s chest.
******
Robin and Pitts gallop towards the cave.
******
Djaq pounds on Marian’s chest.
MUCH: Please.
******
Pitts throws another bandage.
******
Robin reins in his horse.
******
Djaq pounds on Marian’s chest and looks at Much.
MUCH: Yes ! Smiles brightly. Yes !
DJAQ: Laughs. Allah be praised !
MUCH: Raises his fists in the air. Allah be praised !
LITTLE JOHN: Arms wide. Allah be praised !
MUCH: How did you do that ?
DJAQ: Put your finger back in. Now !
Much puts his finger back in. Both of them are breathing heavily. This will happen again. Where is the physician ? I cannot wait.
EXTERIOR.
Robin shoos the horses away.
ROBIN: Yah ! Go on !
Pitts looks nervously behind him.
Djaq ! Djaq ! ... Much ! John !
Pitts follows Robin inside.
INTERIOR.
Robin enters and walks over to Marian.
ROBIN: How is she ?
DJAQ: Alive.
Robin solemnly bends over Marian. Pitts comes over.
ROBIN: to Pitts: You have to save her.
PITTS: Nervous. Science is advanced but we’re always in the hands of the Lord. to Djaq: Here, you give her this.
Pitts pulls a bottle out of his nearly empty bag as Robin takes off his cape. Pitts hands it to Djaq.
It’s a draught for the surgery. Put a little on her tongue.
Pitts looks around nervously. Robin watches Djaq.
DJAQ: She has a dagger wound near the liver. A leaking blood vessel. I have sewn it up.
PITTS: You’ve been trained ?
DJAQ: A little.
PITTS: Good, good. Then you’ve probably saved her life.
MUCH: She has saved her life.
Much nods at Djaq, who returns it.
DJAQ: If you agree, I can close up the wound.
PITTS: Relieved. Very good. Close away. Nervously looks around.
DJAQ: Do you have clean needle ? Pitts looks at Djaq. Thread ? Cloth ?
PITTS: Oh, yes.
Pitts digs in his bag and Robin notices it is void of bandages. Pitts pulls out a case and hands it to Djaq. Much wipes his forehead as Djaq opens the case. Robin glares at Pitts with just his eyes. Pitts stands, watching nervously.
ROBIN: Calmly but with a hint of urgency: Excuse me.
Robin turns and walks quietly out of the cave. Little John frowns at him, watching him go. Pitts wonders if Robin is wise to his ruse.
EXTERIOR.
Robin runs, retracing the way they came earlier. He finds a bandage and picks it up. He continues on and finds another, pulling it off a sapling’s branch. He runs a bit further and finds another bandage hanging off a branch. He looks around for any unwelcome guests, then hears a horse whinny in the distance.
ROBIN: Quietly to himself: What have I done ?
He hears more horses and dogs barking and sees the Sheriff coming through the trees. He runs back to the cave.
INTERIOR.
Little John enters, holding a torch and walking towards Djaq. Robin runs in after him.
ROBIN: Much! John ! Your weapons, now !
Little John jumps.
MUCH: Why ?
ROBIN: Pulling the arrows from his quiver: Unless I am badly mistaken, the Sheriff and Gisborne will arrive at any moment. We’ll be surrounded.
Little John puts on his coat. Much runs to Robin.
MUCH: Panicked: What ? We’ve got to run ! Starts to run outside.
ROBIN: We cannot run ! I cannot run ! Marian.
LITTLE JOHN: We do not run !
MUCH: We are trapped in a cave and surrounded. We’re all gonna die !
ROBIN: Looks at Much. Quietly: Yes.
MUCH: Oh, Lord.
Little John looks out the entrance. Much slams down his cloak.
Allan. Where is Allan ? And Will ?! Where are they ?! Slams arrows around. I thought if I survived the Holy Land, [putting on his sword belt:] then I would die by the fire in Locksley, not in some... forest in some... some poxy, poxy [he kicks dirt into the fire] cave !
ROBIN: Much !
MUCH: What ?!
ROBIN: Let me think !
Pitts walks away from Marian, towards Robin, laughing maniacally. Robin stands up.
ROBIN: You !
Much turns to face Robin.
PITTS: What did you think ? That Gisborne did not tell me that one day somebody might come asking about his alibi ? That we did not have a plan in place for just this occasion ? Sighs. The charade is over. Pitts nods once at Robin with his eyebrows raised and walks past him, then stops.
Oh, your friend is dead. Continues on towards the door.
MUCH: Dead ?
PITTS: Dead !
Robin hurries to Marian. Much looks after him in disbelief. Little John blocks Pitts’ way with his staff. Robin stops and looks at Djaq. She turns to look at him, the sad look confirming what Pitts has just said.
DJAQ: Robin. I’m sorry.
Djaq walks over to him, then passes him, leaving him alone with Marian. Meanwhile, Little John and Much go outside to face the Sheriff.
EXTERIOR.
Crouching behind a large rock, Much slams arrow points into the ground as Little John peeks over another large boulder. They hear horses coming, men shouting and dogs barking.
INTERIOR.
Robin starts to sob, looking at Marian. He slowly steps forward and kneels at her side, sobbing and sniffing. He strokes her face.
ROBIN: Softly: Marian. Puts both hands on the sides of her face. Marian !
He hangs his head and sobs, then looks in her eyes.
I love you. I should have said. Why did I not say ? I love you. Marian. I love you. Sobs. Marian.
Robin kisses her lips, then leans on her chest and cries uncontrollably.
SHERIFF: From outside the cave, singsong: Robin ? Oh, Robin ? Come out, come out wherever you are !
Robin looks up intensely, anger and revenge in his eyes.
